3rd Trimester

numb/burning on top of belly?

The past couple of weeks I've had a numb spot on my skin that burns at the top of my baby bump right under my boobs.  It's much worse on the right side (where LO likes to hang out the most) and been getting progressively more consistent and annoying to where it's pretty much constant now, even when I first wake up in the morning.

My OB told me it's 'normal' and just the baby/organs pushing on nerves under my ribs, but it's driving my crazy and I'm practically squirming in my chair at work.  Any ideas on things to try for relief?  And it WILL go away when LO arrives, right??

Re: numb/burning on top of belly?

  • I've had this since about 28 weeks; it's truely horrible.

I find that tylenol does nothing.  An ice pack does help some, for me.

  • I'm in the same boat and it's really a PITA...I haven't found anything that makes it feel better :(

  • My OB told me that true pain in the area your describing could be related to gall bladder issues.  I also get a numb/tingly feeling there, but it is not pain.  If you are truly in pain, I would ask them to look into it.
  • I get the numb spot too, but it's mostly after I've been sitting for a while.  I try to get up & stretch to give things a little more room & try to sit straight & not hunch over.  I didn't have this with DS, but he dropped really early.  I think once the baby drops, the pressure will be relieved, but until then, I haven't found anything that helps but the stretching...
  • I had the same thing at the beginning of 3rd tri. I asked my OB, and he said it's normal: your muscles are stretching and seperating and your skin is being pulled. It'll go away with time.

Nothing really helped me. I put a lot of lotion there, but it didn't make the burning go away.

  • I've also had this for quite some time. Now there is a matching point in my back that is killing me (so fun, huh?). Really the only thing that helps me is to put pressure on that spot and sometimes an ice pack. I've been known to hold my cup of cold water on the spot for a bit.

  • I am dealing with the same issue.  It is a huge PITA.  I'm not in pain, but just very uncomfortable.  I am hoping he drops soon so I can get some relief, but then I'll probably just have pelvic pain!  LOL!
  • I also have the same problem and when I asked my doctor about it he told me that it was normal because everything is stretching to make room in here.  He didn't seem concerned about it, which I thought was wrong because it hurts!  So then I asked my sister about it who is an RN and on her third pregnancy and she told me the same thing my doctor did.  It was a relief to know that there isn't anything wrong with me, but I would really love to know how to get rid of it.  Most of the time it helps if I push on the spot where it hurts, I haven't tried an ice pack....but I do wish I could put a heating pad on it. I think that would help tons!

I've had this since 28 weeks and was told it could be anything from heart burn to positioning.

I mention at my regular appointment yesterday that it's more intense; I have a cold and BP that's been a bit all over the place and they decide to do blood work to check liver function.

Again said it was probably nothing, but could be a Pre-E sign.

  • Well it looks like I am far from the only one epxeriencing this.  I guess that confirms it's pretty normal...but I certainly don't look forward to 8 more weeks of it!  I'm definitely going to try ice tonight.  I've been trying to make sure I sit up straight and stretch frequently to help things not be so squished...but hasn't helped as of yet.

The nurse said to try a heat pad too.  If it's ligament stretching - heat will do the trick.  (although I can't imagine trying heat because that area feels like it it's burning and more heat is the last thing I want)

    GL!
