What are you going to teach LO to call their genitals?

This came up at work. A coworker of mine has an almost 3-year-old daughter that calls her vagina a "front butt". That is completely bizzare to me. I am just going to call it what it is (ie- penis, vagina). That's what my parents did & it was never a big deal.

As we got older my mom cracked us up by calling it a "tweeter" and the name stuck. Still makes me laugh to this day!

DD calls her vagina a vagina. She calls her butt a butt. Our pedi. was quite impressed with her when she had a UTI a few weeks ago and was able to tell her, "My vagina hurts." lol

My parents taught me the proper names, and would even question me if I called them anything different. But, I DID know alot of other names kids give them at school & such, just cuz, not all parents are as straightforward.

I plan on sticking to the 'call it what it is'. I have a friend who's three year old can't say vagina and calls it a 'Big Giant'

My 3 1/2 year old knows it's her vagina. I hate when people teach their kids euphamisims (sp?). I think it teaches them to feel uncomfortable about their bodies. But my kid also knows already that her vagina is for her only and no one should be touching her there or anywhere covered by her panties. I think education should start early.

Exactly. My co-worker said "well I don't like the word vagina". I told her it doesn't really matter if she likes it, that's what it's called.

We will use the correct names (penis, vagina...). I absolutely hate the cutesy names that people give it! If we call an ear an ear why can't we call a penis a penis?

Sorry, not really. We will teach our children the propper names. If they feel more comfortable calling them something else then thats okay too, but they'll at least know what they're called.

I am not sure where my son came up with this, but at age 6 he is calling his penis a noodle. I get a laugh everytime. My daughter calls it her peepee still (4yrs).

Penis and vagina here too. Ds can't quite make out penis yet, so it is pee-pee. He knows his butt too. My 3 year old neice calls it her vagina as well. I'm all for using the correct terminology for things and being upfront about things.

Call it what it is. This way while there at school the teacher will know what there talking about and there wont be any confusion and they will not have to re-learn the proper terms later. This might be confusing for children to re-learn something after they have called it something else for a long time.

We started off saying penis, but he started saying peepee so it stuck. But I will continue to say penis and let him decide. I do call his butt a bum bum but that is common in my area.

I'm all for using proper words, but growing up (yes I know this was in spanish not english) but my mom just called it all your "pipi". So for a boy pipi was penis and for a girl pipi was just the area you peed from- or she would call it vagina (same in spanish as english).

I'm ok with "pipi" for a boy and "vagina" for a girl

I'll admit that 'front butt' cracked me up; guess that's the 12-year old boy that lives in me. Buy yes, it's weird and I'm all for teaching children to call their genitals a penis or vagina.

I have a friend who's niece calls it a "front butt". That just seems ridiculous to me.

We have taught DS that he has a penis. He also knows that girls have a vagina (after him asking me if I had a penis, and when I said no, he asked what I have!). They are not dirty words, and I would rather my children know the correct terminology.

gotta teach them what it really is. There is no reason to nickname it. Every time this is brought up I think of kindergarten cop where the little boy says boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. Thats the truth why should they think anything else?

for now, we mostly call it her girl parts. sometimes if she's really interested in them, we'll say "yup, that's your labia. Mommy has a labia too, but daddy has a penis." I like the correct names for things.

Oh, and Max will have a penis.
