What are you going to teach LO to call their genitals?

Ethan refers to his penis as a "penis" and refers to "vagina" as someone who "doesn't have a penis."    I'm kidding. He also knows that a woman's private parts are referred to as a "vagina."

We're a very pro-anatomical names family.

The only thing right now not being called its correct name is a butt, which is currently a bum. I suppose we should really call them buttocks if we were going to stick to our rule but I don't think bum is that far off. I wouldn't ever call a penis or a vagina by some strange name though.

I have friend with a 5 yr old boy. They call his penis a "turtle" In school when the teacher was talking about animals and mentioned this is a turtle and held up a picture he stood up, pulled his pants/underwear down, and said "that's not a turtle! This is a turtle!"

Needless to say that was an interesting note home from the teacher... We will mostly like use the correct names. i called mine a chinco (pronounced cheenko). I'm not sure if I spelled it correctly but we had friends who were Japanese and apparantly that is vagina in Japanese. i thought this was kind of cute, but want my daughter to know the correct terms too...

I teach my 5 year old to say "private" she knows what vagina is, but it was easier when she was smaller to say private so she knows no one touches her there but Mommy during bathing. She still calls it that now. This is fine with me because it gets the point across and I don't think the name is "cutesy" at all.

With my DD we call her front genital region both vagina and front bum and we call her back region her butt or back bum, and anus (when we are referring to the actual hole she or others poop from, yes I said poop). This is all depending on what we are talking about. I think that people forget that the vagina is only one part of the genital region so hence when we are washing her in the bath we are washing her entire "front bum". I remember meeting girls that thought their vagina and urethra were one in the same.

Word of warning:   My brother and sister-in-law taught their 2nd child to say "penis" and "vagina"  because they wanted him to use the proper terms.  BACKFIRE... he would walk around stores saying loudly "Mommy, my penis hurts"  or tell strangers about his  penis.  After this, they taught their 3rd and 4th children to say "peepee" until they were old enough to know not to say it loudly.  Then they taught them vagina and penis.

I will follow suit of my brother and sister-in-law.  When she's itty bitty, we'll just say "pee pee"... when she gets older, I'll teach her "vagina"
