I am thinking you mean that SIL is having a baby and 8 year old son wants to get her a gift (that MIL is actually buying)? If that's the case, what about something kind of simple like those "coupons" you can make...that her 8 year old might "help" change a diaper or help put away clothes...cute stuff that an eight year old can do to make him feel like a big brother and help out mom?
if he's 8 why not just ask him what he'd like to get. That seems old enough for him to pick out something, either from a registry or a book or matching outfits. I think it would mean more to him if he had something to do w/ it
