Made a dr. appt. for Cal - should I have just taken the new Rx?

(this is a f/u to my post below about Cal's ear infection)

I called the dr's office and explained about Cal's rough night, and suggested the antibiotic might not be working.  Triage nurse said they could probably just change the antibiotic since it didn't seem to be working but I really wanted him to be seen.  I know they are extra-busy today ('tis the season, I guess!) and double-booked, so that's probably why she was encouraging that.  I'd feel better having someone look him over to confirm what's going on - would you?  Or would you just have had them change the Rx?

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.

  • If his night was really that bad, I absolutely would have had him seen.

  • Nope, I wouldnt let them just change the rx without seeing him. It could be any number of things that are wrong with him and you are not a doctor so you wouldnt know. (I hope that didnt come across as rude, I didnt mean it to). One time I called the pedi because Nolan had discharge comnig out of his eyes. At first over the phone they told me it was probably a clogged tear duct and to clean it with warm water and massage the eye. I called back 3 days later because it was getting worse. The pedi that was there (not our pedi) called in meds for pink eye without even seeing Nolan. Well 3 days later the poor child's eye was swelled shut and when I brought him in he had a really bad ear infection. I will never let them diagnose over the phone again. I think you did the right thing.
  • Thanks for the validation, ladies.  I knew I did the right thing for my own peace of mind, but wondered what others would do in the same situation...  It just didn't feel right to change meds without him being seen.  Would hate to be in a worse position a few days down the road like you were, Mrs.S!

  • I would have done exactly what you did. I'd want him to be seen, and I'd be ticked if a doctor offered to switch the antibiotic without seeing him first. I hope he feels better soon.

  • Yes, I would want him seen again.
  • it all depends on when he was first seen. if it was in the last few days and there are no new symptoms I would not go back in. it is flu season and my pedi's office is a ZOO! these days I only go if really necessary.

not all antibiotics are the same so it could simply be a switch to new meds. but go with your gut. if you feel cal needs to be seen again then certainly make an appt. I hope the little guy feels better soon.  :(
