TTC After a Loss

Back from RE and in shock (long)

So here i have been putting myself through cycles and cycles of clomid, femara, hcg shots, hsg dye test, blood draws... for 9 months now. And it turns out dh has "severely abnormal sperm"

1st of all my ob put me on clomid without recommending a SA for 4 months. I finally insisted on going to an RE a couple of months ago and of course the RE said we need a SA. DH really didn't want to do it and passive aggressively avoided it for 2 months. We got the results back today and he has 0% morphology and 20% motility. So not only are dh's sperm slow, not a single 1 is shaped normally. I am in shock. We are having an IUI tomorrow. But i wonder with this news what are my chances of getting KU.

  • I'm so sorry. I can't believe no one checked for that earlier.

  • That stinks.  I hate that they found that and am surprised that there was no SA earlier.
  • I'm so sorry.  I don't know how this affects your chances. I hope that someone can help you with that, can you talk with them tomorrow before the appt?

  • Wow. That would really PISS me off and I would be mad at my OB. That was the thing with mine as well until I really pushed because I had my HSG... so why not him since my tubes were clear. Well, I still have my issue but still... we should have had a SA A LONG TIME AGO!

Sorry you got bad news and I hope you get some clarification on next steps to help improvement.

  • I am so sorry.  I think the IF board might be a good source of info on the sperm info.  Tomorrow at the IUI make sure you get the pre-wash and post-wash numbers for the sperm.  Sometimes things improve after washing, but I'm not sure if morph will.  DH's motility was 45% at his SA and 97 and 98% on the last 2 IUI's.  My RE doesn't check morph at the IUI because it takes a while to do the test.  I hope you get some answers soon.  Good luck tomorrow!

  • My Ob suggested that my dh have an SA. We're still awaiting the results. My ob and dh's FD agreed that an SA should be done before assuming anything w/me. I'm sorry they put u through that w/o checking him. I think a lot of times they assume if u've conceived before that ur fine to conceive again. Not always the case. Dh and I are both concerned that dd was a fluke good sperm and that maybe he was the cause for the loss last time. Who knows. Maybe its' both of us or neither of us. Guess we'll know soon.

Yay for the IUI tomorrow. That's a step in a positive direction. GL. ((hugs))

  • I'm so sorry! I know that must be so frustrating!!!

  • Wow. I had a similar situation as well. OBs are all knowledgeable about the ladies but never push hard enough for the men to get an SA. This at least happened to us and is my perception. I had to push after my HSG came back normal to get DH tested.

I hope you get some answers here really soon so that it will help your TTC journey.

  • I am so sorry. Did they tell you chances of a successful IUI?

  • The odds are better than without the IUI, but the question is really how many normal sperm will show up tomorrow after the wash.  The wash should weed out the abnormal sperm and the slow or dead ones, and what is left is what they do the IUI with.  I know that some REs won't do IUIs with low numbers, and I also know that with my first (and only successful IUI to date), my husband had 10million post-wash and that is the low end of acceptable.

I hope and pray that you get a good sample tomorrow, and a good number of strong swimmers after the wash.  Good Luck. ::hugs::

  • I can't believe they would just put you on hormones without checking that as a possibility first.  I'm so sorry you received this news today.

  • I am so sorry.  My DH has some stinky firm and we are diagnosed MIF.  Basically he has a moderate count, motility, and morphology...and here I am still TTC on our own until he gets his next SA done in July.  Don't rule out the IUI because it could work.  We were unfortunately unsuccessful but I know others that were successful with similar problems.  IVF worked for us both times as well and we are hoping that our next round will give us our forever baby.  GL tomorrow and keep us posted!
  • Im so sorry. That stinks that no one checked him out before now.  Hopefully this IUI will be your sticky, forever baby
  • so sorry about the SA results. Can't believe you went through all that treatment without him being checked. you'd think an SA is the easiest thing to do so why not get it out of the way first.
