Soy Milk vs. Whole Milk

I was just wondering if any of your LOs drink soy milk and what has been your experience with soy.   Right now, i am doing a combination of both soy and whole.  I'm just wondering if DD is getting the nutrition she needs with the addition of soy because I have no idea the pros and cons.  I recently added soy milk to her diet because I find it eases her constipation problems, for which, i'm sooooo  thankful.  anyway, I'm gonna ask her pediatrician about this at our next visit, but I'd also like to hear from you ladies, as well.  Thanks!

Re: Soy Milk vs. Whole Milk

  • We have had limited success with anything besides breast milk, which was cut off in October.  I can get her to drink chocolate milk once or twice a day, though.  My pedi doesn't care much about a whole lot of milk since he sees lots of overweight babies.  There are plenty of other sources of nutrition besides milk so if the soy works better for you, then go with that.

  • Raleigh drinks Soy Milk b/c she can't drink regular Milk. She's been on it since she was a year old. No problems.

  • I am anti soy for children and adults. So I would say whole milk
  • There are lots of kids who are allergic to milk or who are lactose intolerant that drink soy milk and are fine. Just be sure you are buying fortefied soy milk.

  • Thanks so much for all the comments and advice.  I admit I haven't been purchasing fortified soy milk.... I didn't even know such existed, but will definitely look into that immediately.

yellowtulips - thanks for the comment about violet.  i have to say your Lily is adorable, as well.  What a doll! :)

  • Caroline does better when she's not on whole milk (it causes her some digestive issues).  I've done a little research and asked both my pedi and my older sister who is a doctor... and we have her on almond milk.  It has the good fatty acids that aren't in rice or soy milk, plus it is lower in fat, and they can still get the calcium.

From the limited amount of research I've done, I've come to 2 conclusions:

    1. soy causes the same/similiar inflammation as whole milk does to those who are lactose intolerant
    2. whole milk is overrated

Personally, soy kind of skeeves me out, and I've been reading a lot of research about the estrogen side effects, so I'm staying away from it for now.

BTW I love your siggy - your daughter is absolutely beautiful!

  • jackson drank soy from 1-2 b/c he's allergic to reg milk.  I don't know that I'd voluntarily do soy milk over reg milk though.  He had digestive issues the whole time. We switched to rice milk at 2 and his tummy's been much better.  I've always been worried about his milk whether reg, rice, or soy.  they all have pros and cons IMO.  I would def. talk to your doctor.  The estrogen always worried me with the soy milk, but it was the best I knew to do at the time and my doc doesn't seem worried about any of it.  I'm curious now about almond milk...maybe I'll check it out further and maybe switch over to it b/c the rice has essentially no fat. Was that rambly enough??
  • I am curious about almond milk, also.  After JoJo's comment, I did a cursory google search of almond milk and saw that you can make it at home quite easily.  I might give this a try and run it by violet's pediatrician to see what her thoughts are, too.  By the way, JoJo, where do u purchase almond milk?  Thanks so much for the suggestion!

  • I'm doing a combo.  My ped actually recommended doing some soy because I think there are studies that say having at least one serving of soy a day decreases the future risk of breast cancer or something like that.  I have one DD that seems to like it more than whole milk and one who likes it less.  They get more whole milk than soy though.

I get it at Publix.  It is the Blue Diamond brand, and its in the same section as the soy milk.  You can also buy it at room temp in boxes, but it needs to be refrigerated after opening.  HTH
