Would you go to Jamaica as a babymoon?

DH and are are trying to decide where we want to go for a babymoon but can't decide where and would like your help.

We've looked at some of the Sandals resorts and found one in Jamaica (Ocho Rios) that we both liked. We'd leave mid may for about 5-6 nights. I'm due in August.

We really want someplace with a nice beach that has blue water, white sand and a nice pool. We both like the all inclusive idea too so we don't have to worry about money once we got there but since neither of us has ever been to Jamaica we weren't sure if it'd be someplace that would be safe with me being pregnant.

Thoughts? Any other places that you can think of that we can go?

Re: Would you go to Jamaica as a babymoon?

  • Is there any particular reason why NOT? (Other than you can't drink... b/c that alone would kill me!)

  • Nope.  I'd save my money and go after the baby (when you're ready for a little vacation just the 2 of you.)

If you want to do a babymoon, I'd do somewhere you can drive to.  But that's just me.

  • I wouldnt go to Jamaica period..I heard a lot of bad tourist stories from the place..Like people straying too far from hotel/tourist specific spots and getting mugged/taken and left nude on mountains..Ahhh no thanks >.< Then again I'm paranoid :) Why not hawaii!
  • My parents went to that Sandals and said it isn't that nice. Also, health care in Jamacia is shaky, so I'm not sure I'd go there for a babymoon.

My Dr suggested the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico. PR has an NICU and the Virgin Islands are very close to PR so, god forbid something happens, they can easily airlift you to PR.

We are going to St. Thomas. We booked on www.CheapCaribbean.com   and got an awesome deal for April. We are staying at the Wyndham for 6 days, all inclusive.

Other great places we looked into that are reasonable: Marco Island and the Florida Keys

  • If your doctor clears the travel then I say yes.  Sandals are amazing resorts and no matter what the rest of the island is like, everything is always nice on the property. We went to Sandals Antigua, My parents have been many times to Sandals St Lucia and my brother and his wife just went to one in Jamaica(cant remember which one though). Oh and you just have me thinking... all inclusive right now being pregnant sounds amazing, their food there is SO good I would eat SOOO much right now!!
  • Me and H went to Jamaica on our honeymoon and loved it, we stayed at Breezes in Runaway Bay, its on the small side so no trouble getting reservations or lounge chairs.  Very nice resort, good price, good specialty resturants, and cheaper than Sandles.

  • No.  I like to go to places we can venture around in & Jamaica is not that type of place.  Plus, I'd pick a place with a very good medical system so I know I'd be well taken care of if anything happened.  Anyway, an all-inclusive is not my thing in general b/c I like to try local restarants.  And if I was pregnant & couldn't drink I definitely wouldn't do one.  There is way less expensive ways to travel to the Caribbean than doing Sandals.

Edit:   In terms of other places I'd recommend Aruba, Turks & Caicos, Anguilla, Antigua or the USVI.

  • I would go 100%! We stayed at the Dunns River Villagio (there are 2 Sandals resorts in O.R.) and it was A-MA-ZING. Great food, wonderful beach, awesome pool! We never left the resort, and had a blast.

Good call, I didnt even think of that.

I might go somewhere in the states now and save a trip to Sandals for after the baby.

Ditto this. If you are really intrigued with Jamaica, I'd save it for a time when you aren't pregnant.

    Hawaii
  • Since I wouldn't be able to lay around and drink all day, I woudln't want to go to Jamaica since you can't leave your resort.

Honestly, I'm shocked that so many ladies go to Mexico on their babymoons.  I have been to Mexico over 10 times and every time I have some type of stomach problem.  You can't take Pepto when you're PG, so the idea of being sick in Mexico with no meds sounds like no fun.  Also, going somewhere that you can't drink the water while PG doesn't sound like a good idea either.  I know a ton of ladies do it and have a blast, but it's just not something I'd do.

I would suggest Hawaii or Grand Caymen.  We just got back from Grand Caymen a few weeks ago and it was very nice.  It's the wealthiest caribbean island, so it's very safe and easy to venture around.  We stayed at the Ritz for 7 nights and it was the perfect amount of time.

I've been twice and both times it was awful! I won't go back.

  • personally, and i dont judge those who do otherwise, i would NEVER go anywhere that i couldnt receive excellent medical care-god forbid something happens. what if you go into labor early? what if you start to bleed? what if you get a parasite from the tropical water? etc. for me it really really isnt worth the risk. we are going on a baby moon but we are staying in NY-we are going to the Hamptons and Montauk over the summer and possibly Lake George over in May-oh also Atlantic City in June for my cousins Grad.  Its nothing to crazy but its a few fun weekends to get away before baby and ill still be in an area where i can go to an ER if needed that isnt made in a Tiki Hut

  • I am going to that exact resort in two weeks. I will let you know how it is. DH and I are so excited!!!!
  • Nope, Jamaica isn't safe at all.

DH & I leave at 3am tonight for our babymoon, we're going to Riviera Maya.  Check out the Spa Palace Resort.

  • Yes, I would definitely go if your OB okays you for travel at that point.  DH and I went to Ocho Rios for our 1st Anniversary trip about a year and a half ago, and we stayed at the RIU next door to the Sandals you're thinking of booking.  The beach there is lovely.  The area is safe, too.  We got antsy and left the resort one night, cabbing to the "downtown" area to eat at a beachfront restaurant and have a few drinks.  I never felt unsafe, however, we're experienced travelers who aren't afraid of being in unfamiliar surroundings.  The one downside of a trip to Jamaica if you want to stay anywhere decent is the long ride to Ocho Rios or Negril (until they finish two luxury resorts that are under construction in Montego Bay, there is nowhere in that area I'd consider staying).  Both Ocho Rios and Negril are about 2 hours from the Montego Bay airport- that includes one stop along the way for a bathroom break.  (Sidenote:  I got a terrible UTI while we were in Jamaica, as well as a yeast infection, and then a terrible cut on my toe- I know, crazy- anyway, my resort had a physician on site, called in for an OB for the other stuff, gave me presciptions within 4 hours, and checked on me and changed my bandages daily.  I was very well cared for in a medical sense- granted, this was not the same as going into labor.)

We will be going to Aruba for our babymoon (I'll be  27/28 wks)and opted not to go AI since we love dining out and AI food tends to disappoint me- that and I'm obviously not drinking so why do I want to pay for it?

I have two friends who took a Babymoon to Jamaica and stayed at Couples Swept Away- both LOOOOOVED it.   There is a physician on site there, too.

This. You can't leave your resort because tourists aren't welcomed there like they are in Mexico or Hawaii.

  • Absolutely!  We got married in Negril last April and had an amazing time.  I hate when people talk about how unsafe and awful a place is without ever visiting!  Everyone we encountered was friendly and we never felt un-safe!  If your doctor says it ok I would definetly recomend it!

This. Unless you are having one of those really NICE pregnancies. I'm not, so it is difficult to imagine enjoying a vacation any more than I would enjoy just being able to be lazy. Which I could do at home.
