We have 2 dogs - one big one small. The big one is 90+ lb Goldendoodle. He loves kids and is usually very gentle around LO although he is a bit clumsy. We are very careful not to give either of them opportunity to accidently hurt LO. Well, this morning DS was laying on our bed and DH and I were both kind of leaning over him talking and getting him excited and the dog jumped up and basically smacked DS with his huge paw and scratched the crap out of the whole side of his face including his eyelid! Thank goodness DS must have closed his eye, he didn't get his eye ball. DS is napping now and the dog is outside. I am just so upset. the dog has never done this but I can't stand of him hurting DS. I feel so bad that I didn't keep it from happening. It happened so fast. Now I feel like they shouldn't even be in the same room even with me in it.
Re: Dog scratched DS face really bad :(
It sounds like the dog just wanted to play with him, unfortunately. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just continue to reinforce positive behavior, I guess.
That happened with us, but our dogs are small. One of them wanted to play with the baby (I was right on the floor with them) and the dog put his paw on the baby's head (the way he does with his toys) and he scratched him--- luckily it sounded worse than it was.
First of all, relax! It was an accident. Your dog wasn't being aggressive or trying to hurt LO intentionally.
I know you must feel awful, but I have always kind of had in the back of my mind the possibility that our pit bull could hurt LO on accident (doing the same thing... scratching on accident with his huge paws!). As long as your dog wasn't being aggressive, I would just accept it as something that is going to happen when you have pets and kids - I am pretty sure it will happen again sometime!
Just be as careful as you can be with both of them together and know that stuff like this is going to happen - and it is okay. Your DS will be fine.
lol (only because the baby wasn't hurt)
Thanks ladies. I just feel so bad!
I know that the dog wasn't being aggressive he just "paws" things to play and the way we were talking to DS was getting him excited I think. He wanted to join in. I just can't believe that he managed to swipe his paw in between DH and I so fast before either of us could stop him. His paws are HUGE, like freakishly huge, people always comment.
This exactly! Our dog tends to drop her toys on DS while he's in the bouncy seat!
