We finally clipped Charlie's nails today. We filed them once but we didn't do a good enough job, he kept scratching himself. Every day I've been putting mittens on his hands but I began to worry that having mittens on his hands might slow his development (grasping things, etc). Clipping the nails made me very nervous but I think its a good thing to have the mittens off. How often do you have to clip or file your baby's nails?

Re: How often to clip/file baby's nails?
I am SO bad about this...
I am so bad about it because I am so scared to do it! I file them more often than clipping...I clipped once and accidently got her finger =(

I have to clip them about twice a week. They really do grow fast! I never found the file very effective.
At first it was easy to do when he was sleeping, because he would be on us, or in the bouncy seat and therefore limp and easily accessible.
Now that he's napping in the crib, it's not so easy (because I need to be up close and have light). So I have to do it when he's awake, which is more tricky. I too have nicked him and made him bleed (worst feeling ever!).
I try to do it now while I nurse him, so he's somewhat distracted.
Yeah DH clipped a little part of his finger.
Bummer, I was hoping to only have to do it every month. I didn't know they grow that fast. I'm going to put DH in charge of this. I broke out in a light sweat when he was doing it - there is no way I could do it.
Aww thanks.
Sydney is pretty cute herself. Is she interested in younger men? Jk
I hate doing this! DS' nails grow so fast and he's always scratching himself so I have to do it at least twice a week. It's always a struggle since he's so wiggly. I've found it's easiest to do after a bath when I have him on his changing station - he's usually a little on the mellow side then. I tried little baby nail scissors, but found those a lot harder with my wiggly guy. Filing hasn't really worked.
I used mitts (actually socks) for a few days but stopped because DS loves sucking on his fingers at night - it helps him sleep and I didn't want him not to be able to do that.
