3rd Trimester

Measuring ahead..I know this doesn't mean much, but..

So, two appts ago, my Doctor said I was measuring 2 wks behind.  She told me there was "no way" this was going to be a large baby.  I was concerned about this b/c DH and I were each 9 and 10 lbs at birth and I am shooting for a natural bradley birth.

This wk's appt, same Doctor said that I had a growth spurt and am measuring 1 wk ahead at 37 wks and that this baby could be a "whopper."  Now I am just confused.  Any thoughts or experiences (2nd timers) with measuring ahead and having a large baby.  Or the opposite?

  • They are only estimating.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.  They can be off by a whole pound.

  • I was measuring 3-4 weeks ahead at 34w so they did a growth u/s and DS was already over 7lbs.  I was induced (pre-e) at 38w exactly and DS was 9.5lbs.

If your docs are concerned, they'll do a growth u/s, but 1 week doesn't seem like that big of a deal!

  • If you are only measuring a week ahead I wouldn't think much of it.  With my first I measured 4 weeks ahead almost every single time I went from 22 weeks on!  He was 10 days early and weighed 8 pds 7 ounces.  If he would have went to term he would have been over 9 but I expected him to be big the whole time.
  • I measured 3 weeks ahead with ds all the way thru, and he was 6.2 lbs. I'm measuring right on target with this one, and am terrified that she'll be 12lbs+ Surprise

The measurements depend in part on LO's favorite position, and whether or not they like to stretch out and take up space. I wouldn't worry - I doubt you have a 'whopper' in there if you were small a few weeks ago.

  • Im measuring at 40 weeks, that was at my 35 week appt when I found this out.  Im alot bigger than with my first.  im having a c/s at 38 weeks so i dont have to worry about the size to much.
  • I had a dr tell me I was measuring "big" so she set up an u/s for two weeks later, at that u/s the baby was in the 60% however event he u/s can be off as well so it didn't mean much but even then the baby wasn't big.  That week a different dr measured me and said I was fine.  Two weeks later I had the "big" dr again, she once again told me I was measuring "big".  Today I had an apt and was told I was fine.  Next apt, in two weeks, I see the "big" dr again, so we will see if she thinks I am measuring big, again/still.

The point is that every dr is different in how they measure plus you could have had a growth spurt so the combination would give you opposing info.

  • In all honesty, I would just not even worry about it. With my son they told me one week I was measuring 3 wks ahead and that he was going to be a large baby (to the point that they were discussing c-section) and then the next I was 2 wks ahead and it stayed like that until I gave birth...a week past due to an 8lb baby. I know it's annoying though because you start worrying or thinking that maybe the baby will come sooner and whatnot, but I think it pretty much is useless info. I wish my OB would have never told me about it to be honest lol
  • At today's 34 week appointment, I was measuring a week ahead. I asked if this meant much, and she said not with measuring only 1 week ahead. Now, if I start measuring a few weeks more, then we'd look into it further.

  • My doc won't give me weights because he says they are just guestimates anyway and could be off by quite a bit.

  • I wouldn't worry about it, and I heard in my birth class that 1lb is only 1CM bigger in the head... honestly if you can push a 8 or 9lb baby out a 10lb isn't much bigger!
