Baby Names

Is Emma still so popular??

It's a family name for us, and has been my girl name for years and years.  Now that we're having a girl, it's super popular.  Argh.  It's starting to die out, right?

Re: Is Emma still so popular??

  • Sadly, no, it's not dying out :(

I feel the same about the name Emma.

Last time I checked it was the # 1 girl name on the list for 2009.

I feel the same way about Emma and Ella. My faves until recent popularity.

  • Still very popular.  Over the past 20 years is has gone from #151 to #1 according the Social Security Administration website.

Also according the SSA, in 2008 Emma was #3 in PA, #6 in NJ, and #5 in DE.  Since you're a Philly area gal, I thought I'd give you the tri-state breakdown.

Honestly though, if it is a family name, I say go for it.  It is still a great name.

  • Yes, it's very popular, but it's really a pretty name. My best friend's maiden name is Emma and she is using it for her future daughter's middle name.
  • Top 10 in the last 10 years.  Yeah, really really popular still.  We went for Eden instead of Emma.
  • I think in MI it's begun to die out a little bit.  There are a lot of variations, but most of the Emma's I know now are in elementary school, not just being born.

  • Ugg. same for us, on my list for years and a family name. grrr.
  • Nope - know someone that had a baby last name and that was her name... It's still really popular.  BUT if it is a family name and you love it - I would still go for it!

  • I think if it has special meaning to you - who cares if it's popular?

    Go for it!
