Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does your 6 month old sleep on their tummy?

My LO has always been swaddled when he sleeps.  He sleeps ok - just wakes up 3-4 to eat at night.  I wanted to see if he'd sleep better on his tummy.  I nursed him until he was drowsy and then laid him on his tummy.  He immediately lifted up his head like he does during tummy time.  I gave him some time and he eventually fell asleep.  I went in to check on him and his face is almost face down.  He is breathing fine....but it's freaking me out!

Surely by now a 6 month old can sleep safely on his tummy??

  • We started letting DS sleep on his tummy right around 5 months. He just seems to sleep so much better that way. But we felt comfortable doing it because we have the angelcare monitor.

  • DD has been sleeping on his belly since 5 1/2 months.  He can freely roll back and forth (and does all thru the night!).

  • As long as your LO can turn over on his own and lift his head very well I wouldnt' be so concerned.  DD always was swaddled too up until 6 months for night time. And everytime i would put her on her back in the crib she would automatically roll to her side then on to her belly.  I checked on her like crazy but eventually that part will go away about being nervous.  DD now is a big tummy sleeper!

    This.

If you're still swaddling, I'd stop ASAP now that he's rolling back to belly.

    GL!  :)

  • DD has been sleeping on her tummy since 8 weeks.  We couldn't get her to sleep otherwise and our pedi knew about it.  As long as your LO can lift their head and roll, I wouldn't be super worried.  Just check often.

  • I was about to post no, but I put DS down a few minutes ago, just went in to check on him and he's on his belly fast alseep!
  • He started sleeping on his tummy as soon as he could roll his way there (so, around 4 months).  We still put him down on his back, but he immediately rolls over.

  • DS started tummy sleeping at 4 months when he learned to roll over.  Sure, both DH and I were freaked to the point we slept in the same room, but doc says that as long as they know how to roll over its ok.
  • DS sleeps on his belly all the time now. Pedi told me not to put him to bed on his belly, but if he rolls over (which he does every night) than don't worry about it.
  • My daughter rolls all over the place and normally ends up on her tummy.  I always put her in on her back though...she never stays there.  They say once they can roll and move their heads they are ok, especially since there is not much you can do about it.

  • We took DS out of his sleep positioner as soon as he could roll both ways (at around 5 months) and he started sleeping on his belly.  He sleeps much better now than he did before!
  • Pedi gave us the ok at her four month appt. She's been sleeping great on her tummy since then.
