Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia?

Silly question I know, I think of them as 2 different names.  We are naming DD#2 Sophia and recently someone asked me if we are going to call her Sophie for short...? Do you think of Sophie as a nickname for Sophia?

  • i think it is although i've never thought of it that way.

i have a friend Sophie and a friend Sophia.  they each go by their actual name and i've never thought of them being interchangeable.

  • The way I see it, Sophie can be its own name, or a nickname for Sophia.  Same way that Lucy is it's own name, but it can also be a NN for Lucia or Luciana.

  • Yep.  This is why I am hesitant to name baby Sophia.  I love love love the name Sophia, but not so much a fan of Sophie.
  • Yes. This was our girl name if DS had been a girl, and I was planning on calling her Sophie as a nickname. One person that I recall telling the name to actually got upset and flat out said it is NOT a nickname for Sophia. This is exactly why I will keep the next LO's name a secret until LO is born!
  • Actually Sophie is a little giraffe teething toy from France, I'm sure you've heard of it?

kidding aside... Yes, I can see people using Sophie as a nickname for Sophia.  I wouldn't say it's "short" for Sophia since they're exactly the same length, but yes, people will likely call her that from time to time unless you correct them and ask them not to.
