So I had my first appointment yesterday to confirm I am pregnant and they told me to schedule an appointment in 3 weeks. So when I scheduled I asked what they would be doing and they said meeting with the OB coordinator, blood work, and an exam. No ultrasound! My sister is 19w,6d and she had her first ultrasound at 6w,3d. She said that I should be having one to determine the baby's true due date. Is this true? Should I call and ask why? I dont want to seem like an annoying 1st time pregnant girl, but I am kinda confused. At my next appointment I will be 7w,5d.
Re: When is/was your first Ultrasound?
My first u/s will be on Feb 8th at my first appointment. I had irregular cycles prior to getting pregnant so I am anywhere from what my ticker says to a week or so behind.
My doctors office said it was standard at their practice to have a u/s at the first appointment regardless of regular/irregular cycles.
I had my first u/s at my first appointment, 8weeks, to confirm pregnancy and determined how far along I was for sure. Then not again until I was 20 weeks for growth measurements and gender.
I have heard of OB offices that don't do any u/s until 20 weeks.
Wow I am suprised to see such a range. I guess I will just call and ask. I just think it would be nice to know when I get one.
I too had somewhat of irregular periods, going from 4 to 5 weeks. This was our first month of Clomid. So I might be a week sooner than what they are estimating. I had an ultrasound done back in November when they wanted to make sure everything was fine with me and I thought that was kinda out of the blue. We had only been trying since July.
I have called my doctor at least 10 times already! lol. I even got into an argument with the secretary over the phone because I wanted to know if I could get an early u/s (I was paranoid). I wouldn't worry what they think..it's YOUR BABY and YOUR BODY and if they think you're annoying, oh well! Good luck though!
My first u/s was at my first appt; but I had to beg the dr. to do one. My next one is Feb. 22 to date my pregnancy. They couldn't date it with the first one because I was very early on (5 weeks).
I have irregular cycles too...ugh..bummer! I thought I was about 7 weeks when I had my first appt. but the dr. did an u/s and determined I was around 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 weeks. I know I'm not 4 1/2, so I'm using 5 1/2 as the ticker. Good luck. Whoever knew irregular periods would complicate things so much more?! lol
Last pregnancy I knew when my period was so they used that to calculate my due date. I had one ultrasound at 21 weeks. This time I had to be checked early to rule out an eptopic and to date since I have no idea how far along I really am. I was around 5 1/2 weeks for the first ultrasound, or too early to really date, so I will have another one next week to get a due date. I will get another at 20 weeks and that is it unless there are complications.
Lots of doctors only do 1 unless you are high risk or develop an issue. I would just ask at your next appointment.
When I called they told me they do the first ultrasound between 8 and 10 weeks. Thankfully they scheduled me for the first day of my 8th week. I am so excited! My appointment is on Thursday and I cannot wait!
Then I go back two weeks later for some sort of consultation. Not sure exactly what will be happening. I already had a pre-conception consultation where we talked about genetics and I got some blood tests. I'll ask Thursday what more to expect at the next appointment.
I got my first in my 8th week. Since I live in a small town, that is VERY secluded from any hospitals that deliver babies, they like to check that everything is "green light" from the start.
I got another at 10 weeks 1 day (2 days ago) for some bleeding... We lost our first pregnancy due to bleeding and other complications, and they wanted to make sure that I was not miscarrying again. So I have had 2 already. Which is peace of mind for myself and my husband after what happened last time.
At least I know that I don't have to be MediVac'd out.
I think it depends on policies, locations, and prior histories.
My office does early ultrasounds to date pregnancies and confirm viability. I had mine at 9 weeks. I would have had it a little earlier, but they failed to give me the script after I had my bloodwork done 2 weeks earlier.
I loved being able to see the baby that early.
Were you seeing a fertility specialist? If so they typically like to do an early u/s to see how many babies there are.
Otherwise, it is not "typical" to get an early u/s. Depends on the OB and how many your insurance will pay for. Mine only pays for one but I got my first at 8 weeks at the fertility clinic and I am getting an NT scan at 13 weeks.
Ultrasound before your BFP was to likely check your egg production. At my fertility clinic you get an u/s after each round of clomid to see how many follicles you have that are big enough to fertilize.
18w 6 days.
Most docs just do one around 20 weeks. Thats it. tThere is no reason to do a dating u/s unless you have NO clue when you got pregnant or have a medical issue that requires it.
This. My OB only does 1, around 18 - 20 weeks, unless there's a reason to do another one earlier (or later!).
At my doctor's office, the first regular ultrasound is at 20 weeks. You could have one sooner if you had irregular cycles (and they couldn't accurately guess your EDD based on LMP) or complications early on, or if you elect to have the NT scan (at 12-13 weeks), which we have chosen to do.
Yes, it's always reassuring to see the images on the screen, but if you have to wait until later on, it should be reassuring to know that you aren't medically in need of early ultrasounds!
