1st Trimester

When is/was your first Ultrasound?

So I had my first appointment yesterday to confirm I am pregnant and they told me to schedule an appointment in 3 weeks.  So when I scheduled I asked what they would be doing and they said meeting with the OB coordinator, blood work, and an exam.  No ultrasound!  My sister is 19w,6d and she had her first ultrasound at 6w,3d.  She said that I should be having one to determine the baby's true due date.  Is this true?  Should I call and ask why?  I dont want to seem like an annoying 1st time pregnant girl, but I am kinda confused.  At my next appointment I will be 7w,5d.

Re: When is/was your first Ultrasound?

  • My first u/s will be on Feb 8th at my first appointment.  I had irregular cycles prior to getting pregnant so I am anywhere from what my ticker says to a week or so behind.

My doctors office said it was standard at their practice to have a u/s at the first appointment regardless of regular/irregular cycles.

  • Loading the player...
  • With this pregnancy my first u/s was at 7 weeks and with my first pregnancy I had one at 8 weeks. Some doctors only do one u/s throughout the entire pregnancy.
  • 13 weeks (the optional NT scan) and 20 weeks were my only ultrasounds.  My OB just used my last period to determine the due date.
  • I had mine at 6w6d, but I was seeing an RE for fertility treatments. Like PP said, some doctors only do them between 18-20 weeks to get the measurements and find out the sex.

  • My first was suppose to be on Feb 2nd, which would be 8w3d. I went in early and had my first u/s because of bad morning sickness. But, I think that up to 10 weeks is pretty typical.

  • I will get an u/s at 8 weeks, 20 weeks, and 37 weeks.  I know lots of obs only do one around 20w
  • I got one around 9 weeks, and I'll get another around 20.
  • I had my first u/s at my first appointment, 8weeks, to confirm pregnancy and determined how far along I was for sure. Then not again until I was 20 weeks for growth measurements and gender.

I have heard of OB offices that don't do any u/s until 20 weeks.

  • I had mine at my first doctors visit at 9w5d.  He did measure the baby on the ultrasound to confirm my due date.  I have no idea when my next one will be scheduled for.  It sounds like every doctor does it differently.
  • Wow I am suprised to see such a range.  I guess I will just call and ask.  I just think it would be nice to know when I get one.

I too had somewhat of irregular periods, going from 4 to 5 weeks.  This was our first month of Clomid.  So I might be a week sooner than what they are estimating.  I had an ultrasound done back in November when they wanted to make sure everything was fine with me and I thought that was kinda out of the blue.  We had only been trying since July.

  • My OB typically only does and u/s at 20 weeks. I had one on Friday (at 9 weeks) because of some prior history I have. HTH
  • I had my first at around 8 weeks, to date the pregnancy and check for cysts ( I had had a few before). My old OB only does 1 u/s at 20w, but my midwife will give me one whenever I want, and my insurance covers as many are prescribed. But, that is very rare.

I have called my doctor at least 10 times already! lol. I even got into an argument with the secretary over the phone because I wanted to know if I could get an early u/s (I was paranoid). I wouldn't worry what they think..it's YOUR BABY and YOUR BODY and if they think you're annoying, oh well! Good luck though!

My first u/s was at my first appt; but I had to beg the dr. to do one. My next one is Feb. 22 to date my pregnancy. They couldn't date it with the first one because I was very early on (5 weeks).

I have irregular cycles too...ugh..bummer! I thought I was about 7 weeks when I had my first appt. but the dr. did an u/s and determined I was around 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 weeks. I know I'm not 4 1/2, so I'm using 5 1/2 as the ticker. Good luck. Whoever knew irregular periods would complicate things so much more?! lol

  • I had a vaginal u/s at 7 weeks. They calculated my due date and I even heard the heartbeat. My next one is at 12 weeks. Each doctor is different, but it wouldn't hurt call and ask about their policy regarding when you have your first u/s. Good luck.

  • Last pregnancy I knew when my period was so they used that to calculate my due date.  I had one ultrasound at 21 weeks.  This time I had to be checked early to rule out an eptopic and to date since I have no idea how far along I really am.  I was around 5 1/2 weeks for the first ultrasound, or too early to really date, so I will have another one next week to get a due date.  I will get another at 20 weeks and that is it unless there are complications.

Lots of doctors only do 1 unless you are high risk or develop an issue.  I would just ask at your next appointment.

Carson Henry, born 39w, 2d, via emergency c/s due to no fetal movement and fetal distress.  Seizures, IVH grade 2, brain injury, kidney and liver damage.  Complete blood clot in the artery in his right arm.  27 days in the NICU.  Now discharged from all specialists, excepts his kidney doctor, who will monitor him indefinitely.  My tough little cookie.

  • My first would have been at 20 weeks; however, I had one today at 6w 2d to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.

  • I had a dating ultrasound at 10 weeks because I was SURE I ovulated late.. but normally at my hospital they don't do one until the anatomy scan around 20 weeks.

  • When I called they told me they do the first ultrasound between 8 and 10 weeks.  Thankfully they scheduled me for the first day of my 8th week.  I am so excited!  My appointment is on Thursday and I cannot wait!

Then I go back two weeks later for some sort of consultation.  Not sure exactly what will be happening.  I already had a pre-conception consultation where we talked about genetics and I got some blood tests.  I'll ask Thursday what more to expect at the next appointment.

  • Next Friday at 8w4d.
  • My doc doesn't do the 1st one until 22-24 weeks.  But we are going to a 3D place at 16 weeks to find out the sex.

  • It all just depends on the policies at your dr's office.  Some dr's don't do the first (and sometimes only) u/s until 20 weeks.  I had one at 8 weeks because I am high risk.
  • I got my first in my 8th week. Since I live in a small town, that is VERY secluded from any hospitals that deliver babies, they like to check that everything is "green light" from the start.

I got another at 10 weeks 1 day (2 days ago) for some bleeding... We lost our first pregnancy due to bleeding and other complications, and they wanted to make sure that I was not miscarrying again. So I have had 2 already. Which is peace of mind for myself and my husband after what happened last time.

At least I know that I don't have to be MediVac'd out.

I think it depends on policies, locations, and prior histories.

  • My office does early ultrasounds to date pregnancies and confirm viability.  I had mine at 9 weeks.  I would have had it a little earlier, but they failed to give me the script after I had my bloodwork done 2 weeks earlier.

I loved being able to see the baby that early.

Were you seeing a fertility specialist?  If so they typically like to do an early u/s to see how many babies there are.

Otherwise, it is not "typical" to get an early u/s.  Depends on the OB and how many your insurance will pay for.  Mine only pays for one but I got my first at 8 weeks at the fertility clinic and I am getting an NT scan  at 13 weeks.

Ultrasound before your BFP was to likely check your egg production.  At my fertility clinic you get an u/s after each round of clomid to see how many follicles you have that are big enough to fertilize.

  • I took fertility meds to get pregnant & also have irregular cycles, so I had an early u/s with my OB to date the pregnancy & count babies.  I have a good friend who goes to the same practice who didn't have her first until the 12 week NT scan.  If you opt to not have the NT, they don't do one until 20 weeks.
  • 8 weeks.  I don't have a LMP (nursing when I got pg with no pp period) so they want to date the pregnancy.  However I had a LMP with DS and I got a dating u/s then as well.  I think it's just what my office does.

  • I lost my first baby failry late in the game, and I was(make that am) a nervous freakazoid so I pretty much insisted on an early ultrasound to calm my nerves.  Just did the same thing and got my demands met for a 36 week ultrasound, too-- I don't care if they think I am annoying or too persistent.  I feel better so I am good!  Maybe try explaining that you would like to date the pregnancy, be sure that it is a viable pregnancy, etc. and see what they say?  GL to you!
  • 18w 6 days.

Most docs just do one around 20 weeks. Thats it. tThere is no reason to do a dating u/s unless you have NO clue when you got pregnant or have a medical issue that requires it.

This.  My OB only does 1, around 18 - 20 weeks, unless there's a reason to do another one earlier (or later!).

  • At my doctor's office, the first regular ultrasound is at 20 weeks. You could have one sooner if you had irregular cycles (and they couldn't accurately guess your EDD based on LMP) or complications early on, or if you elect to have the NT scan (at 12-13 weeks), which we have chosen to do.

Yes, it's always reassuring to see the images on the screen, but if you have to wait until later on, it should be reassuring to know that you aren't medically in need of early ultrasounds!

  • I got my first at 10 weeks (which was also my first appt...) I had another at 12 weeks, b/c of some slight bleeding..the next one is the big 20-week.  Do you have your next appt scheduled (after the 7week)?? They might schedule one w/ an u/s in the upcoming weeks...I'd just ask at your next appt.

  • ColieJ- No I didn't see a specialist, but I did one round of Clomid.  So there is a chance, as small as it maybe that there is more than one.  I would really like to know!  The first u/s was to check my ovaries and uterus when we wanted to make sure everything was ok.  I think I am going to call tomorrow and ask when I get one and if not for awhile request one.  I am not sure how many u/s my insurance cover.

  • My first u/s is on Feb 12 at 6w5d.  However, I am under the care of an RE.  If had conceived the traditional way, my OB doesn't do the first u/s until 8 to 12 weeks.

  • In Ontario you always have an US at 12 weeks for something we call IPS screening. Then a second at 20 weeks for fetal anatomy. Then a Third right before you are due to determine size & positioning.
