Anyone dying their hair?

So I haven't dyed my hair since high school. But I'm really bored and I've been thinking that I want to. What are some at home preggo safe kits? Is it ok as long as it says no amonia like natural instincts? Is Garnier Fruitiss ok? I like one of their colors. It doesn't say amonia free though. What do u use?

Re: Anyone dying their hair?

  • Although I'm a SAHW I have had my cosmo liscense for 7 years.  I wouldn't recommend over the counter hair color (ever) but especially while pregnant.  Your hormones are all out of whack & can process the color completely different.  I'd let a pro take over & treat yourself to a salon day.

If you're going to do it at home, just make sure the room you use is well ventilated.  You'll be fine.

  • I think that most of the at home ones are safe.  However, I have heard that you hair reacts differently to the chemicals when you are pregnant and you could end up with bad results.
  • I dye my hair myself all the time.  I use Loreal Preference and I love it.  Have fun dying your hair!!
  • I use Loreal Preference and it has come out fine and the same as always.

  • I just dyed my hair with a home kit i've used in the past. Worked just fine and doctor said it was ok. I didn't do any drastic coloring though, just went up about 2 shades from normal. Turned out fine.

  • I understand that OTC hair dye can be risky... I 100% agree with that... however,  I use Clairol Nice n' Easy with built-in highlights....  I have long, very thick hair... and my hair is very shiny, soft, and I don't have any split ends in between haircuts.   The built-in highlights are true to their word... my hair doesn't look dyed at all, and it has really pretty shades of dark blonde and lighter blonde.

Even my stylist (much to her chagrin)  admits that my hair is extremely healthy, and the color is gorgeous.  Poor girl finally gave up on trying to get me to let her color my hair.

**But I do agree that it is a risk.  I think some people's hair can respond to it well like mine.... and other people's might not turn out too great.

ETA:  In the welcome packet that my doctor handed out.. it said that dying your hair was safe as long as you did it in a well-ventilated area.

  • My hair naturally jet black, and since 19 its been going grey/white. If I went to the salon to get it done I'd be going twice a month the rate it grows so I use the Feria hair color at home. Its great- my hair is always soft and silky and healthy and DH loves the way it smells cause it doesn't have the hair dye smell.

I'm doing mine tonight or tomorrow.

PS- I dye my DH's small grey patch when I do mine.. don't tell he'll kill me! lol

  • My Dr. said it hasn't been proven safe yet so it's up to me if I want to risk it which didn't sound very reassuring to me. ?He said if I do it try to hold off as long as I can because the later in pregnancy the better.?I normally get highlights & haven't gotten them done since BFP so my roots are out of control. ?I'm either going to use a henna color or an organic one and go back to my natural color.?
  • I've colored my hair twice since BFP
  • I dye my hair.  I think I also use L'Oreal Preference or maybe Excellence -- whichever one is the more expensive.  Mine has turned out the same pregnant as before.

Im a hair stylist also and I would seriously recomend you going to a salon if you are going to do it. Definatly dont use  Garnier Fruitiss if you do decide to do it at home because it Fing hard to get out if you hate it. And I have colored my hair the same color for almost a year and the last time it didnt take because of my hormones and whatnot. So just seriously think about it before you make a decision

I've read of some doctor's that don't recommend dying your hair a solid color because it touches your scalp. However, highlights are perfectly safe because the bleach doesn't touch your scalp. If it did, you would feel the burn. It's okay to get your highlights done, your roots will thank you :)

  • I've been dying my hair at home since 6th grade (lol thats horrible) and I've done it twice pregnant so far. Both the last times I've used the 10 minute one (I cannot for the life of me recall what brand it is- but its in a grey box!) I never have high expectations and I didn't go far off my natural color so it turned out fine.
