Subway??

Okay, I've been wondering about eating at Subway.  I love getting a turkey breast 6" with bacon, but since we aren't supposed to eat lunch meat without being heated, is that okay?  I don't like having my Subway sandwiches heated (or lunchmeat warmed for that matter).

Thus far, I've given up on lunch meat but keep thinking about Subway lately.

Re: Subway??

  • Speak to your OB. Chances of getting listeria are very low. It's up to you.

  • I asked my dr about it yesterday and she said it was fine to eat it without being heated. I know other doctors may have different advice. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

This. Do what you're personally comfortable with - I've never known anyone who's contracted listeria from lunchmeat, so for me, it's worth the risk to eat it once in awhile.

  • I've had countless hoagies already.
  • I'd go for it. As long as you're not eating it every day, it's fine. Just be cautious and reasonable. You've still gotta live your life!!

  • My OB ok'd it.

    And, now, I'm super hungry.

OK, so I'll have to disagree a little bit - lunch meat is not one of those "in moderation" categories.  You can go through your entire pregnancy not eating a deli sandwich and cave and eat just one and if you get bad meat, you're screwed.  Or you can eat them every day and never come across bad meat and be fine.  Every time you eat cold deli meat, you're taking a risk.  If it's a risk you're comfortable with, great.  Most people eat it and are fine.

But, there are listeria outbreaks.  It does happen.  And, when a pregnant woman gets it, it's really, really bad.  Really bad.  I am a SUPER risk adverse person, so for me, the risk is simply not worth it.  I know the aftermath of living with myself if the worst happened and I lost the baby would FAR outweight any short term benefit I got from enjoying a cold sandwich.  Also, I don't buy, "if the place looks clean, it's probably fine." - just because someone can wipe the counters down and mop the floor doesn't mean that everyone along the way - from the plant where the meat was processed to the trucks the meat was in to the delivery counter - practiced safe meat handling guidelines.

After DD was born, I made DH go out and get me my favorite deli sandwhich and bring it back to the hospital :-).  It was *such* a nice treat.

  • I went to Subway yesterday with my husband.  I just asked the girl to heat up the meat in the microwave before putting it on my sandwich.  She had no problem with it at all, and the meat wasn't warm anymore by the time I got to eat it. It was safe for the lunchmeat and I got it on the flatbread, so it was healthier too.  I got to enjoy one of my favorite sandwiches and not worry about what it was doing to my baby.
  • Subway has been found to be one of the worst fast food joints for food borne illness b/c of the way they have the meat hanging out all day.  I have stayed away from it for years b/c of that.  Just something to think about.

That being said, I eat deli meat sandwiches that I prepare all the time

  • I went to my first appt on Wednesday, and ask my doctor the same question.  His response was that turkey is fine, and having it heated is even better, but when they talk about deli meats and pregnancy they are more talking about stuff like bologna, and hot dogs for us to stay away from.
  • I've been getting the chicken breast because they heat it up anyways and it's really good.
