Did you make a career change after baby?

I currently work full-time (40-50 hours per week) in a management position. This isn't the type of position that I could job share, or go PT - its all or nothing. I truly feel like going back to this job will be too overwhelming for me, and not good overall for my family. I'm looking into doing a consulting job that would allow me to be self-employed and choose my clients/hours. I would still be working about 30 hours per week, but they would be more flexible.

Did any of you decide to change your job after baby to better accomodate your family life, or am I being a baby about this working thing? The whole decision has been stressing me out lately...

  • I don't think it's a question of being a baby about working -- it's a question of doing what is best for you and your family.  And that answer will be different for each person.  I went back to my same job but while I work 40-50 hrs a week, I have a very flexible schedule that gives me a lot of freedom.  So for now, it's worth it to keep doing this while pursuing other things in the hopes of going PT by the time DD is 9 or 10.  And REALLY needs parental supervision.

  • I'm trying to. I'm a teacher but right now I'm looking at teaching classes online or at a university at night. Ideally, I would like to switch to part time at my school and then teach a college class at night or online. It kills me that I only get to spend a few hours with Cora before she goes to bed. I can't do this next year. I will figure something out, I just don't know what. I just keep praying that God will guide me in the right direction. Good luck!
  • After baby #1 I did not but I knew before I had her that I was ready to make a change.  I had the chance to make that change when I came back from ML with #2.  We had a reorg at work so I moved from a recruiter position to a coordinator position - basic 40 hour work week, totally flexible and awesome boss, work from 2x a week plus as needed at other times.  great hours 7:30 to 4 (never really take a lunch but do work out at the office when I'm there if time permits).  No travel and no over time for the most part and very little stress.  Best move I have made for me in a long time.
