Birth Story LONG

Last Friday night we were leaving to eat dinner with some friends, I started to feel funny and had a few contractions.  I started timing them and they were all over the place so I was sure it was false labor, the weekend before I felt the same way so I didn't think much of it.  This started at 6:49, a little after 9 we were at home and I layed down to see if they would stop and they didn't.  They started to get regular but they were still about 9-10 minutes apart and then stuff started to happen fast...by 10:15 they were 5 minutes apart, we called the doctor and they said to come in.  On our way to the hospital they were 4 minutes apart and getting worse.  Once I was in triage the nurses looked at me and said you're definitely in active labor.  They checked me and I was 4cm dilated, woohoo!!!  Take that stupid nurse at Dr. Seekers. :)  I immediately told them I would want an epidural and by 1am I got my epidural.  By 4am I was 7cm dilated but by 7:30 I still hadn't made anymore progress and the epidural only worked on one side of my body.  They put me on pitocin and did another epidural, the contractions got so much worse and the epidrual failed AGAIN!  Epidural or not I dilated the last 3cm in less than 2 hours and it was time to push.  This was exhausting and I was in a great deal of pain.  3 long hours later he still didn't come out and the doctor came in and said that I wouldn't be able to take much more (which was very true) and we needed to look at doing something else.  It was decided to use a vacuum which broke my heart but I didn't have anything left in me.  I was determined to get him out quickly so I did it in 3 contractions after the episiotomy.  Little man was born 7lbs 1oz and 20 1/2 inches long at 12:51pm.  It was awesome to see him but unfortunately it didn't end there, my placenta wouldn't come out and I was in so much pain I couldn't handle the doctor trying any harder.  They had to do a full d&c right there, they knocked me out and when I came back to both my DH and baby were gone.  I didn't get to really meet my baby for another 2 hours.  That sucked!  Later that night the nurse came in kind of frantic and told me not to get out of bed without a nurse.  I needed a blood transfusion immediately, I had lost so much blood that they said if I would have lost more I would have gone into shock.  What was so irritating is it turns out I was anemic my entire pregnancy and the doctor never did anything about it.  He didn't even tell me, they said that's why my situation was so much worse.  The next morning the doctor came in and said that they had me on antibiotics to help with whatever may have been left behind but that if it didn't work I would need a hysterectomy, thankfully the antibiotics worked.  Little man ended up needing photo therapy for his jaundice which made me so sad but he's doing great and breast feeds like a champ!  He weighs more now than he did when he was born.  He is so precious and I would do it all over again!  Sorry this is so long!  I can't believe it's possible to love someone so much. :)

Re: Birth Story LONG

  • I'm sorry things got so scary for you but all that matters is that you and your little man are safe and sound! And you got to keep your uterus Wink

Anyone know if you can donate blood while breastfeeding? Or if it's recommended even? I need to start restocking the Austin blood supply again. You girls are using it all up!

  • Whew, you had a lot thrown at you! The h-word scared me for you when I was reading that, so I'm glad the antibiotics did their job and it worked out okay. The thought of the pitocin and the epidural not working--wow--bless your heart. That's also strange that your dr. didn't mention the anemia. Do you think he missed it?

Congratulations on your sweet boy and glad things seem to be going well now.

It was in my medical file that when they tested me at 24 and 28 weeks I was anemic but they just didn't mention it.  The nurses said that's why I craved so much ice throughout my pregnancy.

  • Yikes.  Glad you are okay after all that.  Hope you are having a nice relaxing time at home.

I'm glad that all turned out okay.  I think that if it were me, I would be so pissed at that doctor for not mentioning anemia to me...that seems like something major.  You should switch doctors imho.

Congrats on your baby boy.  Glad for you that he is doing well at the breast!!!  Enjoy every minute!!!

  • You poor thing, I feel so bad for you!  My epidural with Jakob failed, too.  I was so mad about that, the ONE thing they can give you for the pain.

At least you get a great consolation prize  :)

    Congrats!

  • Glad everyone is safe and healthy!  Congrats!!!

That's so weird that no one told you to start taking iron pills.  I think it actually might have been the nurses fault- she's the one who would always tell me about the calcium, prenatal, iron, etc.  That sucks.  :(  I think they tell everyone, regardless of what your blood tests show.  Poo!  But glad everything's okay now!!

  • Congrats! I'm do sorry it was a rough delivery but glad to hear you and baby are both fine now. Hope your recovery goes well.
  • Well you know what I think about your whole ideal, but I just wanted to chime in to say that DH and I are so over the moon happy for you guys! Little Man is PRECIOUS and we can't wait to come cuddle on him soon! :)

Hope your recovery is going well!

  • Wow, great story! Glad to hear you and baby came out happy and healthy. They had to use the vaccum to get Gracie out, so I know how you feel there. At least they were able to get him out without a c-section. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
  • Yikes! I can't imagine how scared you were when you woke up and DH and your baby were gone. I'm glad everything is ok now. Congrats on your little guy!
  • Miss you and love you and so glad you are doing better!! Coming to see you three soon I hope. :)
  • congrats on your baby boy!

  • Congrats on your little man!

I'm sorry that it was so rough, but glad everyone is doing better.  I can't believe no one had mentioned to you that you were anemic and got you on iron pills.  My doc and nurses check with me at every appt that I'm taking my iron supps.  That's such a basic thing.  I'm sorry it caused so much trouble.  :(

    This!

  • I am soooooo glad that things are okay and settled down now...

I tell you, this was one SCARY story!

Congrats on the new little one!  Get as much rest as you can!

  • WOW! What an incredible birth story! So happy everything went well with the delivery of your ds but oh, so, sorry about your post-birth drama. I simply cannot imagine! Of course, very happy the antibiotics worked and you didn't need a H... UGH! how scary!! I'm hoping that motherhood has totally distracted you from such events...CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  • I was anemic, on iron, and still had a traumatic experience.  No drugs, doctor digging, bleeding everywhere, etc.  So, it could still happen.  I've since been upgraded to to "complicated" or something for subsequent pregnancies.  But, all was totally fine for my second delivery, so don't be afraid that next time will be so crazy!

Congrats and take it easy recovering.  I felt faint off and on for almost 2 weeks after delivery and was afraid to walk and carry DS because I was afraid I'd be too weak, collapse and drop him.   Thankfully DH was home for almost all of that time.

  • Wow! That all sounds so scary but so glad that you and your little man made it through everything ok!! He's beautiful!

I'm so happy for you and T!!!

And wouldn't you know that he shares his birthday with me and Andy!! :-) What a great day to be born.

    Congratulations!!

  • Ohmygosh! I'm sorry you had so much trouble Sad I'm glad y'all are home and everyone is doing well, now, though! Congratulations!!
