3rd Trimester

What's your post-baby crotch care?

The post below about witch hazel made me realize that I have NO CLUE how to treat my delicate parts after having the baby. A friend mentioned frozen pads, but I'll have to wait and do that when I get home from the hospital, as there won't be a freezer there for me.

The whole Tucks pads are enlightening to me, too. Didn't know about them.

Sooo... any Moms care to share advice on how to take care of yourself right after the baby is born?

  • See, I think this is the stuff that's important that isn't getting discussed, lol!  Your nurses should hook you up with everything you need to get started.  The huge pads and mesh undies combined with ice packs and Tucks pads are a good start, though!

  • The little squirt bottle that the hospital gives you to put warm water in will become your new best friend. Also Dermoplast is wonderful!
  • you and i both came to the same realization. LOL. i'll be hanging around to see responses!
  • I just put pads in the freezer this morning to freeze with water and witch hazel on them.

  • My child birth instructor said to ask the hospital for a sitz bath to take home.  She saisd they always gave them as a matter of course but now they don't give you one unless you ask.  She said its heaven when you get home.  She also said its a good way to take 20 minutes to yourself to relax.

  • The hospital will more than likely send you home with some ice packs.  They are like pads that you break and it  activates the coolness.

I used those for a couple of days along with other things they gave me such as a peri bottle, Kotex, Dermaplast Spray (amazing).  I went out and bought additional Kotex pads in all sizes, thick and pantyliners.

Also, Epson salt baths were soothing for the soreness, I had the lavender smelling salt.  I took about 2-3 of these baths a day.  I had 3rd degree tearing.

The peri-bottle is great when you have to go to the bathroom.  You squirt the warm water at the same time you are going to keep it from burning you.  It's also nice to help cleanse yourself.

  • Oh, and make sure and bring your own undies (ones that you don't care about throwing away later). I was allergic to the mesh ones and that was not fun at all.
  • I am just nervous about my lady parts never returning to their prebaby state...sometimes C-Sections don't sound so bad, atleast I know my lady parts will be 20 years old for a while...lol I dont want the damage!

What's a sitz bath? I thought it was just warm water and epsom salts... so what would you take home? The epsom salts?

The squirt bottles are the best, it feels so good and you feel clean! What is dermoplast though?

  • So, you can buy witchhazel in the drug store, found right next to the rubbing alcohol.  My RN suggested buying a bottle of that and a bag or two of cotton balls, soaking the cotton balls with the witchhazel, freezing them, and then putting a handful down your pants while you're sitting around the house during your first couple of weeks postpartum.

Supposed to have a doubly anti-inflammatory effect between the 'ice' and the witchhazel.  It kinda sounds divine.

  • I'll break it down with all the TMI details for you...

As a first time mom, you'll probably have an episiotomy (or tear).  They'll stitch you up then keep an eye on it.  They'll give you these pad things that have a pocket for a frozen block so it's nice and cool and reduces the swelling.  You'll basically be wearing pads as big as diapers and these ENORMOUS (but oh so wonderful) mesh panties that the hospital provides.

When you go home, you can take one of the enormous pads that you've stocked up on already and place 3-4 tucks pads in a row up the middle of the pad.  Squeeze Prep H in a squiggle over the top of the tucks pads to help with hemhorroids.  SUPER SEXY, I know.

You can try Dermoplast - a spray on stuff that helps with pain but I didn't like it.

Your very best friend in the world will be the squirt bottle the hospital sends you home with.  You won't wipe your lady parts for a while so after you pee, you just squirt yourself clean with some warm water.  You'll be a bloody mess so it's like heaven whenever you use that thing.

It's not as bad as it sounds.  Take the Percocet/Ibuprofin they give you because there's no reason to be in any pain whatsoever.  HTH!

  • After I had DD the hosp was fabulous. They sent me home w/ a full size container of tucks pads and dermaplast spray. This is what they had me do...(while in hosp.) mesh underwear, pad, ice pack (for 20 min. at a time every 3 hours), line the ice pack w/ tucks pads. After I'd pee, pat area dry w/ toilet paper, spritz w/ warm water, pat dry again, spray w/ dermaplast spray & then pull up the mesh underwear w/ the pad, ice pack & tucks pads. Day 2 I only got ice a few times but still lined my pads w/ tucks and it was the same care process. When I got home, tucks about 4x's a day w/ the same care instructions for a week. HTH.

    Do you squirt downwards?

I've heard that in my area, the hospitals don't give you these anymore. I hope they'll give me one on request!

All of this minus the Epsom salt baths. I asked my nurses and they told me not to take baths with Epsom salt. I do recommend soaking your feet in it, though.
  • Okay, I don't know why it just posted my response like 10 times. Sorry!!!

And you do squirt downward. Squirt at front of lady parts and then let it run down,if that makes sense.

  • I loved the ice pack pads from the hospital. I seriously hoarded them so much so that I have a few leftover to use this time. The peri bottle from the hospital was also very useful.

The hospital also gave me Dermaplast spray and another cream (I forget the name), and I had bought myself Tucks pads -- but none were as helpful as the ice packs for me.

I was also given a sitz bath but never used it.

  • A fellow bumpie shared her secret with me a while ago when I too was curious.  Dermaplast, Dermaplast, Dermaplast, lol.  You can find it in Walmart in the first aid section and I have two cans one in my hospital bag and one in our bathroom.

I totally agree! I thought I was going to be overwhelmed with taking care of a newborn...it sounds like my crotch maintenance is going to rank right up there!
