cover baby's face while out in cold?

has anyone heard this?  my mom says that when we're taking her outside (she's 10 days old) in the cold we need to lightly cover her mouth and nose bc her lungs can't handle the cold.  i haven't heard this at all, and seems like there would be a risk of suffocation.

and if i am supposed to cover her mouth...it's 50 degrees here today (unseasonably warm) so we were going to go for a walk.  is that cold enough to do that?

Re: cover baby's face while out in cold?

  • I drape a blanket over his carrier just so the cold wind doesn't hit his face. But I would not consider 50 degrees cold (here that is spring), I do it in like 20-30 degree weather with wind chill factors.

  • I have always covered her face when she goes outside - even if its just in her carrier out to the car. I use the bundleme thing on the carrier, so I just flip it up to cover her face too and then put it down once we are in the car. Earlier this year when it wasnt freezing, I would just put a receving blanket over her. 50 degrees sounds warm enough where you wouldnt need anything, but its like 15 degrees here, so that sounds really warm to me!
  • If it is in the 30's or below I will  cover her face outside. I always have a blanket in her lap and flip the end of that over her head. I uncover as soon as we get in the car/inside.

  • I live in upstate NY so our winters are pretty similar I would think. We're never outside for more than 5 minutes so I never cover his face. His head is always in a hat and hood though and the rest of his body has a coat and heavy blanket on him. Oh, and socks instead of mittens since they're thicker and stay on better.

I would say with 50 degrees make sure he's warm but you don't need to cover his face.

  • I have a car seat cover that has a flap that opens and closes.  I cover DS when we are outside even when I'm just bringing him from the house to the garage (which is attached, but not insulated).  I always uncover him immediately in the car or when we get inside somewhere warm.  I live in MN though, so we've been around 0-20 degrees F lately.  Brrrr!
  • I always cover DS face with a blanket.  I have one on his lap and I just flip it up while we are outside.  As soon as we get in the car or building I put it back down.  I am in WI and it has been cold here lately.  I will probably use the rule of thumb of when I do not need a jacket because it's so warm out then he will not need to be covered.
