Born at 36w 4d on Jan. 6th, 2010. Isaac Richard at 10:59pm, 6 lbs. 19.2 inches long and Emily Jane at 11:07pm, 5 lbs. 9 oz., 19 inches long.
The best single word to describe my labor & delivery story: FAST
Here's the timeline.
9:15pm--I was lying on my couch, reading, when my water breaks, but I didn't really realize it at first. I felt a sort of like suction cup type popping. I thought, "That was weird" but nothing happened right away--no liquid gushing or dripping or anything like that.
9:25--I feel first cramp like contraction. I thought, "Maybe that WAS my water breaking" and decided to stand up. GUSH of fluid. I ran to the bathroom to take care of it.
9:35--DH walks back in the door from church choir practice. I say, "Call Chris (my brother who will watch our 2 year old). My water just broke and I'm having contractions" (my 2nd contraction started about now).
9:50--My brother walks in after hightailing it out of a work party, taking a cab from downtown Chicago to my house on the north side. Record time! He said he told the cab driver what was up and the guy hightailed it for him. Contractions have been every 3-4 minutes.
10:00--DH and I are in the car, and pulling off for the hospital, which is luckily VERY close to our house (about 8-10 blocks). DH drops me off and goes to park the car. My contractions are every 2 minutes in the car.
10:15--I'm at the check in desk in L&D, they move me to triage and start asking the basic questions. Waiting on a doc to come w/ a u/s machine since my OB was not on duty and they were trying to decide if I could go vaginal or not (Isaac was head down, Emily was breech.Regular OB is very comfortable w/ breech extractions w/ 2nd twin, some others aren't...this would prove to be a moot point). In the meantime I am having CRAZY fast contractions (a minute apart) and LOTS of pressure.
Foggy on exact times here but basically this is how it went.
-Dr. and Midwife come in, do a u/s. They now decide to check my cervix. Dr. says, "She's complete and the baby is RIGHT there". I tell them with my next contraction that I feel like I need to push. Everyone says, "DON'T PUSH YET"...easier said than done when basically no pushing is necessary! I also say, "So...I guess this means no epidural???" The Dr. says, "Um, sweetie...you're having these babies NOW. You'll be fine."
-They get an OR room set up for twin delivery, get me out of triage and in the OR. Isaac is pretty much crowning right now.
-I help shimmy my @rse over to the OR bed. And have to immediately start pushing.
10:59pm--Isaac Richard is born
-Dr. reaches up and Emily has flipped head down, yay!! Have to do a few pushes to get her in position, then she starts coming out fast too.
11:07, 8 minutes after her brother, Emily Jane is born. -----------------------------------------
Let me just tell you, while I did want to delivery vaginally, I FULLY planned on getting that epi, I was not in the "med free delivery" camp. LOL! But when you arrive at the hospital complete, well....life just laughs at your silly plans then!
It was not so bad as I imagined it would be. The contractions were way worse than delivery, IMO, especially after initial crowning. And the 2nd was much easier than the first b/c he'd paved the way, so to speak and she was smaller. But it all happened SO fast. Less than 2 hours start to finish!! It still blows my mind.

Both kiddos are great, and will go home with me today! It was 36w 4d that they were born. They are having a little trouble nursing, but are getting better. Isaac is actually turning into a champ, Emily is having a tougher time, but she's getting there.
So! That's my story. I still can't believe it went down the way it did, but now i've got quite the tale to tell and 2 beautiful additions to our family!
Isaac is on the left, Emily is on the right.
