babywearing out by yourself

was it difficult for you at first to babywear while you were out and about by yourself, wearing baby and carrying diaper bag and any baby paraphenelia or did it work itself out?  i know i've seen the mamas with strollers and they have their 'extras' in the underneath storage so they're not carrying anything.  it just randomly occurred to me last night that it might take some getting used to at least at first, no?

Re: babywearing out by yourself

  • i usually just stuck a diaper or two, a wetbag and a bottle in my purse. i didn't go anywhere for long in the beginning. i left the big bag in the car when we actually went into the store. i still do this a lot of the time, and we use a stroller most of the time now because jack loves it. i just have a larger purse than i used to

  • It really depended on where I was going.  I never really took a diaper bag anywhere that I was going to be only for a short time (still don't), like the grocery store.  I eventually switched to a backpack for a diaper bag and that made it pretty darn easy to carry while wearing DS.
  • i just always kept the diaper bag in the car.  i used a carabiner for my keys so they could clip to my waistband, and my wrap had a pocket for my wallet.  i'd rather change DS in the car instead of a public bathroom anyways.
  • Once I started going out alone with DD, it wasn't for like 6 hours or anything so I would change her before we left into one of my favorite/most reliable diapers, I would tuck a CD in my purse just in case and that was it.  Figured if the situation arose, I would make due with what was in a public bathroom.  But really, never needed to do a change when I hopped to Target or the market or to take a walk or go over to my neighbor's house to hang out.  I HATE changing DD in public places - dirty public bathrooms, bad lighting, weird echos, she is squirmy, nowhere clean to put down your stuff, etc.  I try to limit the times I have to do it.

Oh and my purse has a shoulder strap and also a sling over body strap so that helps when wearing DD.

  • Not at all.  In fact, I found one of the biggest perks of BWing to be that I could easily manage DD & my "stuff" alone.

  • I'm the same as everyone else. I just throw a diaper in my purse and leave the diaper bag in the car. She always falls asleep as soon as I get her in the wrap and I have a pretty big purse so it's no issue at all.

  • this is fabulous news - i was under the impression that there was all sorts of things you 'needed' when going anywhere with baby for any amt of time.  hence the huge diaper bag.

so those of you that just toss a dipe and maybe a wetbag in your purse, do you do without a changing pad?  do people actually USE changing pads IRL or is it just one of those things you think you'll need/use but don't in actuality when out and about?

It depends.  Our diaper bag came with a thin nylon pad that was easy to fold up and stick in my purse.  But, if we were going somewhere that I might take a small blanket, I just used the blanket, not the pad.  I think I may have even changed her ON the wetbag before. lol

  • I don't carry a diaper bag. ?I feel like all the extra crap isn't really necessary. ?I would put a few extra diapers in the car and a chew toy or something in my purse and go. ?The Ergo has a little zipper pouch on the front for some small extras.

YES, me too.  I hate trying to use those gross changing tables, not letting DD touch anything and trying to balance the diaper bag so that I don't have to put it on the floor.

  • I'm with everyone else - wearing is so much easier than dealing with a stroller, etc...  Plus most often, especially early on, we weren't gone long enough to need to deal with a change.  I'd generally bring a diaper just in case, but if it was a grocery store run, for example, I'd just change DS right before and then as soon as we got home.

  • I think in the beginning my diaper bag was my security blanket.  We kind of have a way of going out to breakfast on the weekend and being gone all day, though, so anytime I left the house I wanted to be prepared for anything.  Plus, my car at the time was a '97 Jeep Cherokee, so I wanted to be covered in case I got stuck somewhere.  I also carried my reusable grocery bags in my diaper bag (and they took up a ton of space!), so I  would always take it in to the grocery store, etc.  Now, I'm more likely to just take my wallet, cell phone, keys, and a bag or two if I need one and rely on the diapers and toys that I keep stashed in the car.  Unless we're going to lunch (in which case I have to bring food, spoon, bib, and puffs) or anywhere with DH on the weekend, due to our tendency for side-tripping.
  • Oh, and as far as babywearing while out, I didn't do it much at first because all I had was a Loveyduds/Moby and a mei tai and they just didn't work for us.  I figured I'd just tie it on and then put her in when we got somewhere, but if she was asleep I never wanted to get her out.  And I didn't want to put it on or take it off outside because it would be dragging all over the place.  Same with my mei tai, the ties are crazy long.  Once I got the Beco, though, we were golden.
  • i used a sling.  it's amazing what you can actually cram in there (besides the baby).  i carried my cards/$ in a little card case that fit in the pocket of the sling (as did my phone).  i could stuff a diaper/burp cloth/etc in the sides of the sling (under arms).

when i did use my diaper bag, i lengthened teh strap and carried it across my chest (top of the sling, but not over baby) and had the bag bumping on my butt.
