Coffee Makers, do you have single brew or a carafe?

If you have a single brew coffee maker, are there any cons to it?

Our coffee maker broke yesterday, so we bought another one, a carafe one, and I loathe it already.  We had a carafe one, but this one is driving me up a wall this morning.

DH thinks we should take it back (agree) and get a single brew (not so sure).

  • I have a Tassimo and love it. It works pretty well. It is perfect for us as I like flavored coffee and DH does not.

  • I have a keurig and love it. I know about 8 other people with them and everyone really likes them.

We drink a lot of coffee too, but it still works for us. I buy the coffee online in bulk so its not that expensive. Once you find flavors/brands you like, its not that expensive if you buy it by the case. Also, they have a refillable pod you can buy for $10 or so that you can fill with any ground coffee.

  • We have a glass carafe coffe maker (10-cup Krups). I agree with PMQ, we drink a lot of coffee, so a single serving would not do.
  • I have a keurig, but I'm the only one who drinks coffee in the mornings (DH waits until he gets to work).  I think that if you drink a lot, it could get pricey - even if you order in bulk.  It is really nice to have a variety of flavors/brews - for instance, we have decaf because DH drinks it at night sometimes.  And I just recently found chai latte pods.

There was a post about keurigs yesterday and lots of comments about how the biggest cup of coffee they make is 9 oz (although I guess there's one that makes an 11 oz one).  I've gotten used to that.

I got one of those my kcup things in my stocking - where you can put regular coffee in it.  It kind of makes a mess and isn't really worth it.

We have a carafe one as backup for when the grandparents stay with us - they all seem to drink a lot of coffee (like 3-4 cups a day each) and it makes more sense to brew it that way (I'm finding I don't like it as much anymore though).

  • I like our carafe. We buy brazilian coffee in bricks, so it is super inexpensive to make really good coffee - don't care if we throw out a cup or two.  Our has a timer, so coffee is ready in the morning - although we only set it on weekends.  I like the carafe because when we have company, we are able to make a big pot a coffee.   I'd probably like the Keurig too - but I'd have to keep the carafe for parties.

  • We have a carafe. I definitely wouldn't want anything like a keurig. Neat concept, but I like to be able to adjust how I make my coffee. I think I would probably like one of the single serve coffee makers, though. Right now I've been using our new espresso maker to make lattes. Love it.
  • We drink quite a bit of coffee, too, but it's spread out over the day. I'd like a single serve so we can have fresh coffee each time.
  • I found the Keurig post, thanks.

I drink coffee throughout the day too and I think that it would actually be great for me.

I hate getting ready to run out the door and finding there's no coffee, but the kids are standing in their jackets and I don't have time to clean out the pot, refill it, wait, etc.

Plus, we have the thermal carafe from our previous coffee maker, so we can keep that.

I think I'm going to get the single brew.  Keurig?  There are so many options.  I like the Tassimo (sp) concept that you can use all different kinds of cups in it - I believe.

  • No way would a single brew cut it around here.

We have the Cuisinart thermal carafe one.

  • I bought the Keurig yesterday.  So far so good.  I need to find the certain coffee that I like the best, but I have a ton of samples that came with it - so I'm working my way through it.  I drink a lot of coffee and am used to refilling throughout the day - so this will take some getting used to.  But so far so good.  Love it.

  • I like my coffee VERY strong and VERY hot. My neighbor has the Keurig and we tried it out the other day. It wasn't hot enough for me or strong enough. The single brew just didn't cut it for me.
  • Single brew wouldn't work for us. We don't necessarily make coffee every single day, but when we do make coffee (especially on the weekends) we'll go through a 10 cup pot before we even get dressed for the day, then another pot in the afternoon.

Also, we make our coffee double strength. Those single brew ones wouldn't be strong enough for our tastes. I also like getting coffee beans from a local coffee roaster, so there's another incentive to stick with our regular coffee pot.

  • I guess I am the only one but I really just don't like the coffee from the single serve coffee makers. It seems everyone has them now and I feel like it smells like a good cup of coffee but just doesn't have the taste and isn't hot. We had a keurig at work and it was a major disappointment. But from the way everyone else really raves I guess I have just not had good experiences? I'm sticking with my carafe for now.

  • Every time I have tried coffee from a single serve machine I haven't liked it, and I don't like how you can't adjust the strength, etc. Additionally, I would hate having to store a bunch of those single serve things. We drink a LOT of coffee - I have no more room to store any more bulk items than we already have.

  • West-coast late chime-in here, but I am in love, love, LOVE with our Nespresso machine!!!

Makes both coffee and espresso, and I absolutely LOVE it - the espresso has the best flavor, and the coffee is yummy!  And all this from someone who didn't drink coffee until we got the machine :)  It also has a separate milk frother so you can make lattes, mochas, etc. It's like having Starbucks on your kitchen counter :)  I'm in love.

Not inexpensive at 55 cents a cup, but no waste b/c it's a cup at a time machine, and lots of good choices, so well worth it, IMO!

Not sure that's the cheapest place to buy it, so worth a quick online search (www.nespresso.com, too).  :)

  • I drink my coffee very strong so the pod/single cup concept doesn't work for me.  The coffee is just too weak.  But, even if you use a traditional machine you can make any amount of coffee you want.  Until DH started drinking coffee last year I never brewed more than 2 mugs (5 measured cups) at a time since that's all I drink at once and I won't drink old coffee, so I don't really understand the popularity of the single cup machines..

This is why I love the Nespresso machine - you can choose different pods with different coffee/espresso intensities, and the stronger ones have amazing flavor and are super-rich and yummy.

If you want to try the machine out Williams-Sonoma and Sur La Table have them on display and do samples :)

  • Typically carafe but DH bought me a single serve French Press for Christmas--which is what I've been wanting.  Can't wait to use it!
