This thread is hilarious. Spelling and grammar are important but that has already been said. If I had a penny for every time I hear college students spout atrocities all day long, I'd be richer than Bill Gates. I won't go into my pet peeves because I have too many but what truly gets to me is that if I, a non-native English speaker, have pretty damned good grammar and spelling all things considered, why don't native speakers? Wait...was that a run on sentence? Never mind, most people here don't even know what a run on sentence is.
My point is that people should, at the very least, make an effort to spell correctly and use proper grammar. Furthermore, you would sound a hell of a lot less stupid if you actually stopped to think about what you're going to say or write before you do. If you did, you'd realize what you are saying is not what you mean. Could care less, anyone? If you can, then DO! I could go on and on.
Sherina, truly, I think that (and it's been said before by someone else here) no one is talking about typos or a couple mistakes. I *think* it's more a pattern that people point out, and again, when the only impression people can really get of you is your written word, it works in yourfavor to have your writing look cleaner.
I do agree. Being able to correctly convey your feelings in writing is a great skill. It's not a skill that I personally could function without. It is a skill that I will make sure my children have. My whole point is that it's not fair to say that a person is an idiot because they don't have clean writing or proofread their posts, especially on a message board. It's not the SAT's. It's not that serious. Also, unless you are someone's friend personally, why judge? You (not "you" specifically) don't know what person's situtation or what they struggle with.

Personally, I think you seem to have a burr up your bottom for some reason. Maybe you should take a freakin' chill pill and quit being a B****!
bwahahahahahahhaha!
Do you feel sorry for my husband and kids, too?
I do. It does not matter what the controversy is occuring on the boards, you ALWAYS seem to be in the middle of it attacking people. I'm kind of tired of seeing your picture.

and no one was attacking. i think it was a severely needed PSA.
and also, how is it possible for someone to be an adult and not be able to know whether a word should have an -ed at the end? the op was fascinating, to be honest.
The OP made me wince with the pre-med remark.
Can you imagine anything more terrifying than going in to meet with your neurosurgeon, and having him speak to you like someone out of "Deliverance?"
Knowing how to speak and write is a critically important skill in absolutely any field. Okay...maybe not if you are a mime, but that's about it.
I'm dying. This whole thread is hilarious, but this post takes the cake! I even read it to my husband (which I never do as he could care less about the bump) and he died laughing too!
Since I'm not a mime, I agree whole-heartedly that written and verbal communication skills are absolutely essential and I think it's ridiculous for someone to DEFEND poor spelling or grammar. I'm not going to make a post saying 2 + 2 = 6 and start yelling at everyone to just deal with it and accept it because I'm not good at math.
I could honestly care less what people think... once again its THE BUMP...
I wrote it cause I was cracking up at all the snarky comments directed at people cause they had a spelling mistake or two. I found it rediculous. And Im saracastic by nature... some people get that, some people don't.
lol! really? this is rEdiculous...and I'M being SARACASTIC, but hahahhahahahhahahA!! i get it, i really do, really. not being snarky. at. all.

Someone else who thinks my kid is ugly, alas.
I think you're confusing me with someone else. Where did I attack someone? You're quoting a post where I get called a name, not the other way around.
Hi, my name is Ally.... I have several college degrees... including my undergrad was in pre-med....and.... I CAN'T SPELL.... *waits for gasps* . Also I have horrible grammer. Differential calculus I can do, write and English essay, I suck at. So I am apologizing in advanced for all the spelling and grammer mistakes that I am sure I will make in the next 6 months. I am terribly sorry if this offends any of your delicate sensibilities, but honestly I can care less about spelling. I've done pretty darm well in my life for having sucky spelling and grammer, and I will continue to do so.
Also flaming people for bad spelling is dumb, this is the bump, a message forum, not a Harvard thesis paper. World peace will not be threatened by mispelled words and grammer on the bump.
I have said my peace.
Gosh, I can't imagine how you didn't make it to med school.

Oh how I would love to remember every post that I have seen your "opinion" shared freely. I am not refering singularly to this post. I am refering to almost every comment that you have typed over the last couple of months. And no, I am not confusing you with someone else...I know the stupid wolf picture well.

No kidding. "Pre-med" isn't even a major. Your undergrad can't be "in pre-med." Pre-med is just something you are and you take classes to prepare you for medical school. You actually have to have a real major.
You don't get a pass to be a shitty speller if you didn't make it all the way.
Well, this whole thread actually makes me sad. My step-father cannot read or write. He has a learning disability. However, he did graduate high school, and before my two younger siblings were born, he was enrolled in college. His spelling would probably make your eyes bleed. He knows he can't spell, and he is very sensitive to it. I remember the first time I made a joke about it, not knowing he couldn't spell, and he cried. It's not his fault. He has tried to teach himself (using the leap frog books, or whatever they are) and he just can't do it. Even spell check or t9word on his cell phone doesn't help. He gets extremely frustrated and I feel bad. He isn't ever sure which spelling is correct (when it comes to words like to or too, etc.) I feel even worse that people would consider him an idiot because he can't read or write. If only they knew the struggle he has...
I, myself, am not very good with grammar either. I took college level English in my last two years of high school and was able to test out of my credits for college, so I am good with English. I am a junior studying chemistry right now. I kick butt at science. If you ask me to write you a research paper, I can. I will proofread the heck out of it. However, I am not going to sit here and edit my post ten times to make sure it is prim and proper. Why? Because this is what I consider to be casual conversation, where grammar is not the most important. I try my best to make sure my spelling is correct (and if I mess up something, Firefox underlines it in red for me ha-ha), but grammar, I'm certain I will always have errors. I don't consider myself an idiot for that though. Grammar has always been a hurdle for me, just like calculus or algebra is for those who aren't good at math.
I'm probably throwing myself under the bus for all of this, but oh well. I don't think we should condemn someone to the idiot category just because they can't spell.

I am willing to bet he would never argue that knowing spelling and grammar was trivial and nit-picking. He is acutely aware of how it affects his life.
Lets all chill out....flame something flame worthy...it's just hanging out here...no need to get so upset. I agree with the op....I work in a very professional setting..but when i'm with the girls I use slang...and i'm from east ky..soooo....that being said..you'll hear "I reckon"...and..."ain't it"...among others im sure would make your ears bleed.
woah woah woah. Stop the presses!!!! You're from Eastern KY too?!?!?!

I am a teacher of bilingual students and I will very strongly disagree that grammar and spelling are not important. My students and their parents are judged on a daily basis for their lack of English grammar. Interestingly enough, I spend a significant amount of time helping parents and students edit their writing so they may make a good first impression on others. They are very acutely aware of the affect spelling and grammar have on other's opinions of them. Why, then, is it acceptable for native English speakers to blow it off as unimportant?
Also, the assumption that poor spelling and grammar only appears in casual settings like a message board is completely false. Most likely, these same people are writing poorly in real life. The lines between formal and informal writing are incredibly blurred. If you doubt it, just check the job applications received by my sister from recent college grads. It is sad.
I say all this from the point of a view of a person with a mom who was an English teacher with horrendous spelling, and a husband who could not spell if his life depended on it. I do not believe they are less intelligent for their lack of spelling, but they are both well aware of the impression they leave when they spell incorrectly. They try anything to avoid it and I think more people need to take pride in the product they produce.
This has nothing to do with our kids- this has to do with THE BUMP. A dang internet forum where you can hang with "friends" and not be attacked.
Secondly- everyone on here is from different educational backgrounds so you maybe insulting someone who never even finished high school and you maybe making someone feel ashamed of something they can't help.
Okay I haven't read the whole post yet but I had to respond to this. They most certainly can "help" themselves. All they have to do is download Mozilla Firefox and use it to surf the web. It has an integrated "spell check" feature. So it tells me when I misspell a word, and I fix that word. Not much work, and an easy fix. When I read posts written in poorly spelled, and broken English I tend to discredit most of what they are writing (if I can actually read most of it that is).
I agree with the PP who said if you don't think written communication is important then you don't have a right to complain when your child comes home with vast math/science knowledge but cannot write a well-written paper to save his life. It is attitudes like yours that tell your children not to value the English written language because of course "you did just fine without a firm grasp of it." All areas of knowledge are important. I stink at math, but I value the importance of the subject and will do everything within my power to help my children be successful in this area.

I have said my peace.
I'm an English teacher.
I think it's ridiculous to say that command of written English is unimportant because you will succeed at life without it. It indicates an acceptance of mediocrity.
Moreover, the phrase you're looking for is couldn't care less.
Heather, you took the words right out of my mouth!
I'd just like to add that world peace may, in fact, be threatened by the majority's apparent lack of education. Huzzah.
