Hi, my name is Ally.... I have several college degrees... including my undergrad was in pre-med....and.... I CAN'T SPELL.... *waits for gasps* . Also I have horrible grammer. Differential calculus I can do, write and English essay, I suck at. So I am apologizing in advanced for all the spelling and grammer mistakes that I am sure I will make in the next 6 months. I am terribly sorry if this offends any of your delicate sensibilities, but honestly I can care less about spelling. I've done pretty darm well in my life for having sucky spelling and grammer, and I will continue to do so.
Also flaming people for bad spelling is dumb, this is the bump, a message forum, not a Harvard thesis paper. World peace will not be threatened by mispelled words and grammer on the bump.
I have said my peace.
I'm an English teacher.
I think it's ridiculous to say that command of written English is unimportant because you will succeed at life without it. It indicates an acceptance of mediocrity.
Moreover, the phrase you're looking for is couldn't care less.
My opinion...if you weren't an English teacher, you wouldn't give two sh!ts about it.
Also my opinion, I chose to not finish schooling to become a teacher (after completing 3 1/2 years) because of people who act like they are holy healers because theyre teaching kids how to spell encyclopedia. GET OVER IT! And sometimes especially on message boards, its not so much "spelling" or "English" people have issues with, its just typing. OMG, is a computer ed teacher gonna come on here and freak out now!?
But seriously, I generally don't flame spelling too much because my brother is dyslexic and I have dyslexic friends. They want to be parts of communities like this and they get shunned and it is just hard. And spell check doesn't make a difference when their brain is unable to process which spelling is correct.
But, text talk I will flame till the cows come home. U know wut I mean?
No one is calling you names, but you seem to enjoy picking on others. I am glad someone called you out on it.
Where is the trend of me picking on others? I made a total of 1 reference to someone's poor grammar and called attention to a rude siggy image. In fact, yesterday I said I thought everyone should lay off the gender disappointment girl. I have been picked on in this post more than anyone, ha ha. One of these wackjobs followed me over to 12-24 to call me names over there, too!
I was thinking the same thing. I never (until the 1 reference you mentioned) see you picking on people for the grammar or spelling
Same with DH. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Tech, and I had to heavily edit most of his English/Humanities papers. I did get my minor in writing and linguistics, but since I got pregnant, I can barely string two sentences together.
Heather, I think high standards are wonderful for students. I think teachers with low standards are hurting our schools. However, it's important to understand that you cannot hold everyone to the same standards.
These women are not your students, you are not their teacher. If they cannot spell, it's no skin off your back, so ignore it.
No one is calling you names, but you seem to enjoy picking on others. I am glad someone called you out on it.
it is said that our brains (as it varies from person to person)
processes information differently. Some people are more linguistically
inclined than they are mathematically incline; (the whole left brain -
right brain thing).
So thank god there isn't a final English exam to become a mother because i would fail! But I did have scholarships for math and science.
Those THROWING out their degrees were doing so in reference to the lady who posted her degree as VALIDATION for picking on spelling mistakes, we were pointing out she isn't the only educated person on the board.

I think it's ironic that stating that spelling and grammar may actually be important is apparently picking on others (it wasn't an attack on a person, just a general viewpoint) and that she is now getting flamed for it in a post asking people not to flame and judge others.
There will always be people who care about spelling, even on an online message board. There will always be people who don't care about spelling, especially on an online message board.
Amazing that almost all the time we can get along just fine, isn't it? Stating where you stand on the issue and debating it is NOT "picking on others." In general posts, spelling usually doesn't come up unless people are getting picked on because people are pissed at them for some other reason. So making the point that spelling is important in a post ABOUT SPELLING is totally appropriate IMO.
when you spell badly and use poor grammar, I assume you are ignorant. Thus, I cannot be bothered to read the drivel you post, as I cannot get past your (not you're) mistakes that make me lose (not loose) my eyeballs right out of my head.
you are not 14. There is no reason to write like you are.
Those THROWING out their degrees were doing so in reference to the lady who posted her degree as VALIDATION for picking on spelling mistakes, we were pointing out she isn't the only educated person on the board.
She mentioned she was an English teacher. That could mean many things, depending what state you live in. I had plenty of friends I taught with in Florida who had degrees in things completely unrelated to teaching, even unrelated to their subject.
Maybe she AW'd her OMGAWESOMEZ English degree on another post, and if she did, my bad.

Tabitha, the OP said she had many degrees in her original post. I said I was an English teacher by way of explanation why I value spelling.
This is an internet message board. The ONLY way you have to communicate here is the written word. You are delusional if you think poor spelling and grammar don't affect how others perceive you here.
In your fantasy world, there is great equality throughout the land between those who got 750 verbal on their SATs and those who think someone can be "prejudice" or "handicap." But in the real world (and yes, the Bump is part of the real world), you look like a moron.

I have an English degree, and I think you're overreacting. Although, getting an English degree didn't actually entail learning any grammer.
I think having a good command of the English language is important. But it's not the be all and end all measure of someone's intelligence. Especially in casual situations.
Wow whatever college you got an English degree from deserves a big fat FAIL! Not only is your sentence structure HORRIBLE so is your spelling and grammar. Yikes, if I were the dean of your college I wouldn't want to claim you as an alumni.

And this is exactly why some people with disabilites feel they have no place on a message board.

OK, this is where it starts getting absurd. I really hope that was sarcasm. That was sarcasm, right? Because there's a difference between being conversational (like starting a sentence with "Because," which is grammatically incorrect but conversational in nature and IMO fine for a message board), which I think most bumpies do, and making numerous large errors.

My best friend has the worst spelling on the planet, and is dyslexic. She does nothing all day BUT go on message boards. She has 4 kids, and they are all parenting boards. She does fine. How? Spell check. It is our friend.

I don't see why this is funny. I posted a previous post about my brother and friends who have this issue. I also work with people with disabilities. When your brain cannot process between loose and lose to tell which one is correct spell check doesn't help much. It is great that this method works for your friend, but there is a whole field of research and study out there about alternative methods for providing assistance for spelling since people with dyslexia cannot always look at a written word and tell if it is the correct one.
and also, how is it possible for someone to be an adult and not be able to know whether a word should have an -ed at the end? the op was fascinating, to be honest.
I am a high school Government teacher. I have a B.S. in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy. I am currently working on my M.Ed. With ALL of that being said, I was told in the 7th grade by my English teacher that spelling is not a sign of intelligence, and I have stated that before on The Bump. All of my educational research has said the same thing. Being able to logically answer and figure out a problem using the context clues is the measure of intelligence, not if you can spell the answer to the problem. Like a pp said, give your stuff a one over before you post it, but is it a HUGE deal if I have grammar, spelling or typing errors? Not that spelling isn't a great skill to have, but if it's not necessary in your daily life then it's not going to be great, and if you can't spell, you're not a moron. Same with math and even science. We adapt our lives to our strengths. To me, that's smart.

The same way someone can be an adult and not know the difference between: there, their and their or two, too and to, or here and hear. These are common mistakes that I see on the bump. Are all of these people dummies too?

lmao. yes. they should not have graduated high school. how the F can someone seriously not know the difference in those words?
This is what idiots say who can't form a rational thought. So you're saying that people who have mental retardations whom while were in school, learned social skills and trades and not physics and European Literature and use those trades to live independently using these skills are dumb? They use what their strengths are to live the best possible lives. That's stupid right? I'm sure.

I would really like to know what grammar and spelling can get me in life on top of what I already have?? I have a husband who I'm totally in love with, I have a baby on the way, a great job, great health great friends and family. I'm quite satisfied in life and I have terrible English.

Perhaps this will make me unpopular, but what the heck-
IMO, if you have a problem with homonyms it is just pure laziness. It's not a matter of understanding some complex problem or situation, it's a matter of memorizing what each one means. Unless you have a specific learning disabilty (as the op discussed), not knowing your homonyms is being lazy and nothing to be proud of.
That being said, I would never flame someone for incorrectly using them on a message board, because let's face it, we all occasionally get lazy on these boards when it comes to grammar.
I totally agree. I have alot of friends who went to Montissory(sp? ironically enough) school (which is awesome and where I would like to send my own children) and they are all really really smart and creative and like, geniuses at math. And not a one of them can spell worth a damn.
A stellar example of why Montessori education is a nice pre-school environment but not a place to keep your kids for important building blocks of learning in elementary school.

The OP made me wince with the pre-med remark.
Can you imagine anything more terrifying than going in to meet with your neurosurgeon, and having him speak to you like someone out of "Deliverance?"
Knowing how to speak and write is a critically important skill in absolutely any field. Okay...maybe not if you are a mime, but that's about it.

Sherina, truly, I think that (and it's been said before by someone else here) no one is talking about typos or a couple mistakes. I *think* it's more a pattern that people point out, and again, when the only impression people can really get of you is your written word, it works in your favor to have your writing look cleaner.
