Hi, my name is Ally.... I have several college degrees... including my undergrad was in pre-med....and.... I CAN'T SPELL.... *waits for gasps* . Also I have horrible grammer. Differential calculus I can do, write and English essay, I suck at. So I am apologizing in advanced for all the spelling and grammer mistakes that I am sure I will make in the next 6 months. I am terribly sorry if this offends any of your delicate sensibilities, but honestly I can care less about spelling. I've done pretty darm well in my life for having sucky spelling and grammer, and I will continue to do so.
Also flaming people for bad spelling is dumb, this is the bump, a message forum, not a Harvard thesis paper. World peace will not be threatened by mispelled words and grammer on the bump.
I have said my peace.
Re: Spelling Apology.. in Advanced
I'm an English teacher.
I think it's ridiculous to say that command of written English is unimportant because you will succeed at life without it. It indicates an acceptance of mediocrity.
Moreover, the phrase you're looking for is couldn't care less.
I have an English degree, and I think you're overreacting. Although, getting an English degree didn't actually entail learning any grammer.
I think having a good command of the English language is important. But it's not the be all and end all measure of someone's intelligence. Especially in casual situations.
I can't spell either!!! I get VERY annoyed when people at work correct me. I am educated, spelling is just not my strong point. I don't think its a big deal. Those who make it a big deal....... get over it
OK then.
So math is the only academic thing important in life: that's what I'm learning from this thread, as it's been indicated twice.
You people are going to be the same ones bltching about schools' failing test scores and "what are they teaching kids these days?".
Ok you are an English teacher- great.
When I am at work and I am having important conversations with doctors (who most have terrible spelling as well) about saving their patients lives, I don't speak slang, and my english is great.
When I am hangin with my girlfriends, we joke, use slang, talk like southern hillbillies even sometimes. And the bump is just that- hangin with my gf's.
OK, but you don't get to call your kids' teachers in the future because, after all, it's not a big deal that they can't write in standard English. As long as they can do long division.
Not being Snarky.....
But as a reading specialist....this is my problem with Montessori schools....wonderful for just the right type of kid. But lets be honest.....its better to be well rounded than be super awesome at Math and Science.
Also I'm not a spelling Nazi, I've actually stuck up for a few ppl here and there. But I do feel the need to say, communication skills the most important measure of intelligence. So....if you want to come across as an intelligent person, you should at least give your written work a once over with your eyes. I'm not saying you should edit your bump posts, but a quick glance will help you to avoid the grammar and spelling Nazi's.
With that said, I've made spelling mistakes on the bump and I will make more. I'm sure if someone goes through this post they will find one or two....but honestly, I'm more concerned with the Swedish Fish I'm indulging in than worrying about typos.
This has nothing to do with our kids- this has to do with THE BUMP. A dang internet forum where you can hang with "friends" and not be attacked.
Secondly- everyone on here is from different educational backgrounds so you maybe insulting someone who never even finished high school and you maybe making someone feel ashamed of something they can't help.
I think most people who get flamed for spelling and grammar either a) are already being flamed for something else and people pick on that as well or b) it is so bad it is almost unreadable, including a complete lack of punctuation, texting abbreviations, and common words misspelled out of laziness.
A word here or there spelled wrong isn't a big deal, and let's face it - people also have typos. It's when you get a message that actually gives you a headache that it's a problem. I say that because this is a message board, not a job application or business letter - there spelling and grammar are important. I know at my job my boss throws away any applications that have any errors in spelling or grammar. The wonderful thing about our world is that there's spell check for those instances.
Fair enough.
However, spell check is just a click away.
You are getting really into this post. I'm just wondering if you started this thread to get ppl going. Its better to let controversial subjects go if you want to remain under the radar. Starting a thread like this is only going to ensure that some ppl always notice your spelling and grammar. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to help. I don't want to see ppl peg you as the next "Diane" or something.
Except that you made it about real life, not the Bump, because you said you can get through life fine by being good at math instead.
As to the second, now we're worried about insulting people? When I was insulted below by the jackass button, I was told to get over it. A bit of a double standard, no?
I could honestly care less what people think... once again its THE BUMP...
I wrote it cause I was cracking up at all the snarky comments directed at people cause they had a spelling mistake or two. I found it rediculous. And Im saracastic by nature... some people get that, some people don't.
This is why spell check is an awesome thing to have. Both my firefox and IE have it. When you are on an internet message board you are judge for everything.
Okay, well I've been on here a little longer and I know how these things work. If you don't mind...then go right ahead. I just hate to see people set themselves up.
Personally, I think you seem to have a burr up your bottom for some reason. Maybe you should take a freakin' chill pill and quit being a B****!
bwahahahahahahhaha!
Do you feel sorry for my husband and kids, too?
I have degrees in history and political science, I've written countless research papers, and am certified to teach 5-12. I am a very good speller. I believe this makes me better than other people. So much better, that it is okay to insult them and make them feel like pieces of crap for not knowing how to spell.
I hold my students accountable for spelling done on formal assignments, that being said, I have EXCEPTIONALLY BRIGHT STUDENTS who cannot spell. If you are a teacher, you should know this. I feel sorry for your students.
This is thebump. Where women from all different sorts of backgrounds can come together. I just have to say, get a life.
I did NOT say that. I just meant that those people are smart in OTHER ways, and that not being a good speller doesn't automatically make someone an IDIOT.
Also, my husband is a former high school teacher, so trust me, I will never be "bitching" about either of those things.
I so love how you started a post you knew would end up in an argument and now you're saying you won't argue anymore as though you are the better person in this thread.
I'm actually not one of the snarky ones and normally I would agree with you, but it feels like you tried to get ppl going and now you're pulling out. I think thats really immature.
If you could care less then why was this thread started to begin with?
Isn't it "said my piece", not peace.
She was being sarcastic.
Thank you. She started the thread so she could have this argument.
But you feel sorry for my husband and kids too, right? Right?
I hold my students to high standards. I make no apologies for it.
I need to get a life because I hold people to high standards? Your thinking is flawed. Also, please show me where I called someone an idiot for their grammar or name-called at all. I'm the one getting called names and insulted here because I believe in the importance of written fluency. And somehow my students have become the victims, lol.
Several people here are arguing there's a difference between real life and online. If that indeed holds true, is it just possible that I use a more gentle tone in instructing my students?
I wasn't catching the sarcasm at all, but I have seen plenty of people on here say "peace" so it was a serious question because as far as I know it is piece.
So let me get this straight...
Those who can't spell say...it is not a big deal
Those who can think that attitude is crazy talk.
I can't spell and it is nothing to be proud of nor somthing to accept as okay. You lose credibility when you post something that a hot mess and your point is lost so...
No the reason I'm done with it is because what originally started out as a somewhat funny post to say it was silly to flame people on here turned into insults and mud slinging. I never thought people would take their spelling so seriously. I apologize that it started all this. People just need to chill. Its an online forum, none of this is needed.
If you want to be taken seriously then it counts. From one bad speller to another...
Edit for spelling, lol...hey I had a toddler on my lap!
Heather, I think high standards are wonderful for students. I think teachers with low standards are hurting our schools. However, it's important to understand that you cannot hold everyone to the same standards.
These women are not your students, you are not their teacher. If they cannot spell, it's no skin off your back, so ignore it.
No one is calling you names, but you seem to enjoy picking on others. I am glad someone called you out on it.
LOL I am sure that is it.
No, wait, I am sure she doesn't know the difference.
This. I don't understand why it is so hard for people to spell check things. No one is saying you have to be perfect, but seriously - make it readable. Use appropriate punctuation, capitalize, and paragraphs. When you are communicating through written words, you want to be able to get your point across.
I can't spell either. Some peoples' minds are just wired differently. Personally, I find it a little over the top when people are called out for minor or occasional errors, but that's usually because I don't often notice it.
That said, the magic of spell check is a wonderful thing. A tiny bit of effort goes a long way. Also: Starting a thread to bash those who feel perfection in spelling and grammar is important is just as bad as bashing spelling and grammar.
Where is the trend of me picking on others? I made a total of 1 reference to someone's poor grammar and called attention to a rude siggy image. In fact, yesterday I said I thought everyone should lay off the gender disappointment girl. I have been picked on in this post more than anyone, ha ha. One of these wackjobs followed me over to 12-24 to call me names over there, too!
Firefox underlines misspelled words in red.
TA-DA!
Happy Festivus!
I am extremely interested in knowing what the OP's several college degrees are in. Anyone?
Just my curiosity.
