3rd Trimester

Trying to get to 39 weeks?

I had my appointment today and I'm 37 1/2 weeks.  My MW said she wants me to get to 39 weeks, even though I have mild preeclampsia.  They will induce me if I make it to 39....I was really hoping to go just a couple days earlier since my mom's visiting from out of state.

And not that the money's a big issue, but 39 weeks for me is January 1st!  Would it make that big of a difference if he came 3 days earlier in 2009 (yes, my hubby would LOVE the tax deduction...)?

Anyone else's doc or MW say they won't induce prior to 39 weeks?  Is there a reason?

  • Mine won't induce prior to 41 weeks unless there is a medical need.

    Preeclampsia is a medical need.

  • That is odd with the pre-e.  If it's a medical need, I would think they'd induce as soon as you were full-term.  It must be really mild pre-e.  (I've never had pre-e so no experience there.)  I was induced with DD#1 at 37w because of IUGR.  They probably would have induced as early as 35w if we'd caught it earlier.  It was only when we saw she hadn't grown from the 34w u/s to the 37w u/s that it was caught.
  • There has been a lot of concern lately over babies born a little early, so generally, yes, they'll try and get you to 39 weeks. A big concern is dating--if you're 38 weeks instead of 39, it can make a difference.

And yes, every day does make an impact, though I might push for a 12/31 induction. ;)

I'm in a similar boat: I haven't been diagnosed with pre-e, but I've had high BP and have spilled protein (this has been going on since 28 weeks). As long as it doesn't get out of control, they want me to stay pregnant (though I was told on Saturday they now have a "low threshhold" for inducing me).

  • have you talked to your MW about your preference to induce just a couple of days earlier than they plan?  I don't see why it would be an issue since there is a medical reason and it would be better for you guys.

  • My Dr will not induce until January.  We have to pay a whole other insurance deductible and tomorrow when I see him I am going to see if he will budge at all.  I mean really at our last appt he said she is ready.  She can come between now and 3 weeks.
  • mine doesn't induce until overdue and 39 weeks is not overdue.    timing could be off so that is often a reason.   at 39 weeks you could still go a couple more weeks and deliver naturally

Again, I think some people are missing that the induction is for a medical reason.

  • Yes - the reason is that due dates can be off by a week or two and that could make a huge difference in your baby's lung development and, therefore, chance of increased medical issues when born. My OB will not induce or schedule a c-section before 39 weeks for this reason unless medically necessary and, if there IS a medical reason, an amnio must be done to determine lung development (if underdeveloped, a steriod treatment would be prescribed).

I understand that. I was answering her question at the end of her post.
