TTC After a Loss

I want to chart but have a problem. Any suggestions?

Okay - so after making my clicky below I realize that I should probably just bite the bullet and start charting so I know what's going on.  Here's my problem: I never wake up at the same time, so I will have to set an alarm or something just for temping.  It will have to be really early (like 5 or so) because I always have to pee at some crazy hour and I know that getting up to pee messes up your chart if you do it within a certain time frame prior to temping.

I can't just set my regular alarm though because it will wake up my two dogs and they will want to eat breakfast and go for a walk as soon as they hear an alarm.  So I need to figure out a way to set an alarm that will only wake me up.  Does anyone else have this issue?  If you've figured out a way to deal with it, please share!

  • You can use your cell phone- maybe set it to vibrate and put it under your pillow, so the dogs don't hear it?

  • Can you make your alarm really quiet? I've had to do this with mine so DH doesn't wake up. Do your dogs sleep in your room? If not they might not hear it.

  • Yes, they sleep in our room.  I might just give the super quiet alarm thing a try and see how it goes.  I can't do the cell phone thing because it will vibrate all night long from all of my e-mails and I don't think there's a way to make it only vibrate for an alarm (although I will try to figure out if there's a way to do this because it is a great idea).

Thanks ladies!  I guess I'm out of excuses.

  • I set my alarm every morning for 5:45, take my temp (usually half asleep lol) and then go back to bed for half hour to an hour.

I used to have to set it for 6, but then I started waking up on my own before that, so I had to adjust lol.

  • I thought I was going to have the same problem with my dog but when my alarm goes off at 6 to temp, he just raises his head, gives me a dirty look and goes right back to sleep. I guess it is too early for him or something. Are you sure your dogs will react the way you think? Maybe test it out for 1 day.

I'd give this a shot. Since you're going back to sleep anyway maybe even temp at 4 AM?

Also - it'll be a pain to find but they make alarm watches that vibrate. Strap it on if you're a restless sleeper or just leave under your pillow if now and that should do the trick.

Although I would think the beeping of the therm. would wake the dogs anyway?

This is what I do, and I found that after a few weeks I just kind of woke up at the right time naturally.  Hope that helps!

  • Let me first say that I am by no means a charting purist.  I use a basic Vick's thermometer that only reads to the .1, because it's quiet and fast, and I am not careful about when I temp.

I'm a really light sleeper, and wake up at different points every night.  I was not going to mess around with setting an alarm, either.  So I operate under these rules:  I temp the first time I wake up during the night, unless it's been less than 3 hours since I fell asleep.  Whether it's 3 am or 6 am, I temp.  Also, while it's certainly not for everyone, I temp vaginally.  I started because it was quieter under the covers, but it does keep my temps more solid through the night.

I think I've got almost all of my charts linked in my ticker.  I've never had a problem catching a clear shift even though I'm such a slacker.

Maybe give it a cycle being more rigid, and if you have a clear (more than .4 degree) shift, relax it a bit.
