High-Risk Pregnancy

baby aspirin

I know there are a lot of you with clotting issues and I'm hoping you might be able to give me some insight.  I've been taking baby aspirin this whole pregnancy (on the advice of an RE and with my OB's knowledge).  My doctor is recommending to stop at 36 weeks (i'm 33 weeks now).  I am absolutely petrified that something terrible will happen when I stop.  I know this is kind of the standard protocol, but I'm just so worried.  Can anyone offer reassurance or help?

Thanks in advance.

Re: baby aspirin

  • Stopping blood-thinning medications is standard.  I'm not sure when, but 36 weeks sounds reasonable, at least to me, because you could really give birth at any time -- say your pregnancy goes to 38 weeks, for example, you will then have had 2 weeks off the aspirin before you have the baby.  That will reduce your bleeding risks for birth, regardless of whether you push the baby out or have a surgical birth for some reason.

  • I took it my entire pregnancy, right up through the day I gave birth by c-section with no issues, and my doctors were fully aware I'd be giving birth any time by c-section.

  • This is a very good question and I will address it w/ my OBGYN on Friday.  I too take baby aspirin and haven't been told to stop yet.  With my DS I took it right up til delivery and bled a lot.  I'm a bit scared if they say to stop it but I also know what can happen if I don't.  GL  Kel
