DH & Paternity leave

How much time (if any) did your DH take off after your LO was born?

I started having contractions on a Thursday morning. DH took the day off and the next day, DS was born. He was off of work for about 10 days. He works for his dad and he is thinking about asking for 2 weeks off this time. I hope he does.

Re: DH & Paternity leave

  • 2.5 weeks. i had her on a thursday and he went back to work on a monday.

i've asked him if he'll take more time off for the next, but his current position is more important than where he was last time. either he or his boss *has* to be there, so i don't think they'll approve more.

  • He took two weeks vacay after the birth and split up his actual paternity leave throughout the year. I think it was a total of 6 weeks?
  • Last time DH took 2 days.  This time I hope he takes a few weeks.  He gets up to 6 weeks if he wants, but it takes up his vacation and sick time.

  • DH is a firefighter, so he works 24h shifts every third day. They forwarded him sick days, and he ended up being off for almost 2 weeks, which was actually 4 shift days. By the time we have our 2nd DC, he'll have more sick time banked and will likely take more time off.
  • D was born the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, so he took the rest of the week off.  Then, through the end of the year, he took off every Monday and a couple Fridays here and there.  It helped make the transition sooo much easier to have him there part-time.  I think that's probably what we'll end up doing this time around.
  • Only 2 days. Next time I really, really want him to take at least 1 week..except he only has 2 weeks available AND he can only take time off certain times during the month, not just whenever he wants Sad  Sigh.

    ETA: correct grammar!

  • None. He went back to work the day after we got home from the hospital.

  • DH took off 8 wks, I was on leave for 12. We were really blessed that he was able to do that with all the vaca and sick time he had built up. It helped out so much!
  • 1 week

DD was breech, so he had a planned "vacation" the week after my scheduled C, but my water broke 2 weeks early. Technically, he worked one day while I was in the hospital, but then was off 3 days after we came home.

  • DH gets 2 weeks paid paternity leave.  He took one full week when Matthew was born, then worked 2 weeks of 1/2 days.  It was nice and helped ease the transition!

  • DH took off about 3 weeks after each baby but then worked from home for a few weeks after that (so he was home for over a month each time). He has almost 6 weeks of PTO each year, so we're very lucky.
  • Had DD on Tuesday, he took off until the following Wednesday (worked a half day), then took off every Friday for the rest of the summer (I'm a teacher so I didn't go back for 5 months).

This time, I've asked him to take off a couple of weeks since we will have a toddler and a newborn and then still do the every Friday off thing.

  • DH didn't have any paid paternity.  He took a couple of weeks of vacation when DD was born, and then over the next month or so after that I'd say he averaged 3/4 time taking the rest on vaca as needed.

  • Three weeks (two unpaid), worked a week, and then took two weeks of vacation for Christmas.

    It was fantastic.

  • I think it was about 8-9 days he had off (including weekend). It was really nice, since my c-section recovery was pretty rough and I wasn't able to get up and walk with ease until about 7 days pp.
  • He took a week off, but worked from home quite a bit the second week.

  • I was in the ICU after Ds's birth and DH took off a total of 3 maaaaybe 4 days of work.

  • He took 3wks vacation so he could get a paycheck.  If he took 3wks FMLA, he wouldn't have gotten paid.

  • He only took 6 days off work so he was home for 10 including weekends. I really hope next baby he has more time off!
  • 2 weeks vacation time

  • I had Ella on a Friday and he went back to work the next Friday. He only has 2 days of paternity leave. :(
  • DH's company gives fathers a week off after the birth. DH took that, and went back to work partway through the following week, if I remember correctly.

He will probably do something similar this time, depending on how well the transition is going. He has tons of vacation time saved up, so he could easily take several weeks off if he wanted to. But unless it's necessary, both of us would rather keep that time "in the bank". Plus, my mom will be here from OOT to help out with DD for maybe the first ten-ish days, and I'd rather have him take time off later if I need his help.

  • He had no paternity leave policy. He took one week of sick time. Not enough. :(

  • Liam was born on Saturday morning. DH took the following week off.
  • DH took 2 weeks off, but decided to go back early, the day he returned the jerks fired him.  NICE!
  • DH ended up taking off a whole week before DD was born, because of prodromal labor. I would have contractions that were 5-1-1 and have to go to the hospital, so he'd leave work and then I'd end up getting sent home because I wasn't progressing. So he just decided to take off until the baby came because that was easier and the MW thought it would be any day. Then he stayed home three or four weeks after.
  • My husband works for his dad and got no paternity leave.  He took a couple half days when I was in the hospital - but that was it.  To be honest, I was perfectly content not having him home with me.  We would probably drive each other nuts.
  • Mine gets 3 weeks then is taking a week off when I get my gallbladder out.
  • DH gets no paternity leave.  Any time he takes off will be either unpaid or using sick/vacation time.

I had DS on a Tuesday and he went back to work the next Monday. His work called him NON stop when I was in the hospital being induced and even had the nerve to call at 5AM the day I delievered DS and 7AM the day after. It drove me bonkers.

  • DH took off three unpaid days.  he works for a very small company and they offer no paid leave whatsoever.

  • DH doesn't really have any set time for paternity leave but he asked for a few extra days and his boss said yes. DD was born on a Saturday and DH took most of the following week off.

Also, we were able to divide my parental leave between the two of us. So when I went back to work at 10 months, DH was able to take my last two months off to be with DD. It's a Canadian thing.

  • With DS1, DH took 7 work days off (thurs/fri when DS was born and then the full week after).  He was 3 weeks into a new job and we were so lucky his company let him do that.

With DS2, he actually did paid family leave through the state so he gets 6 total weeks.  So he took 3 weeks when DS2 was born (one of those was with vacation time, plus 2 weeks paid by state).  After Christmas he is taking 2 more weeks and then 3 weeks in May. All of those count towards state disability ("family bonding").
