Humidifier, elevated mattress, water to drink, Delsym (1/2 tsp for him) and Ian is still up there hacking up a lung every night. He coughs during the day too, but not as bad. I haven't called the pedi yet as I always figure they are going to tell me to keep doing what I'm doing, but I'm thinking of calling tomorrow.
Short of the above, is there much else I can do?? I can't imagine he's getting solid sleep, and I know we aren't.
Re: Guys, I don't know what else to do about this.
When my DD has a night cough, Vicks Baby Rub on the chest seems to calm her enough to get good sleep. . . I know it's not really helping the cough, per se, but it always seems to let her settle down.
Hang in there!
Oh that makes sense! I will ask about that when I call about this tomorrow.
Ugh, poor guy. We got through this too. Sometimes we will bundle them up and go sit outside if it gets really bad. The cold air can break up the cough.
When they are awake, we give them chamomille tea with honey and chicken broth. I think the heat helps, and chamomille is healing.
We have a nebulizer b/c of the frequency (unfortunatley) that we need it. My pedi isn't ready to diagnose Emi with asthma, but they are watching her. Is Ian wheezing? If so, I would call the pedi, he may need a breathing treatment.
Bring on SPRING! Hope he feels better soon
Nope because I haven't called yet. But I don't think it's croup since it's not at all a "barky" cough - more rattley and phleghmy.
Could it be an ear infection? My girls cough like that with ear infections but don't run a fever or tug on their ears or anything.
Otherwise, I'd try Benedryl. It might help dry him out so he doesn't have the drip. Could even be allergies causing the drip but either way, Benedryl would help him sleep and probably dry him out.
poor kid. I hate that drip that keeps them up. Sometimes Benadryl works for us, other times 12 hour Delsym.
my 8 month old had something like that for 3 weeks until the pedi finally gave her an antibiotic because it wouldn't give up. after a week on the antibiotic (so sick for 4 weeks total) the cough and phlegm finally cleared up. the doctor said it was probably a sinus infection. if he's been battling this for a while, i'd give the pedi a call.
good luck!
