Twim Moms - when were you restricted travel?

When did your doctor tell you was the latest you could fly? So far I've had a pretty *knock on wood* easy pregnancy with twins, but I'm only 20w5d. I plan on calling my OB tomorrow as I wonder if I'm right on the cusp by planning on flying when 25-26 weeks. TIA!

ETA: This would be about a 2 1/2 hour flight

  • My peri told me it would be "not smart" to fly at 22 weeks.  She kept repeating that, too ... "not smart."  So I missed my first shower, which was a 2.5-hr. flight away.

  • When I asked about travel when I was about 18 weeks, my OB advised against it.  I probably could have gone (same length of flight - 2.5 hrs) but decided to play it safe and didn't.
  • At my 19 week appointment, I asked about flying because a good friend was having a baby shower in Indianapolis (I am in San Diego).  I would have been 24 weeks pregnant at the time of the shower.  The Peri said I could absolutely go, but I should wear compression stockings since the flight was so long.

ETA:  I am 26 weeks now and there's no way in hell I could sit through a flight.  I am glad I didn't end up going.

  • My MFM encouraged me to complete all travel by 24 weeks. Both my OB and MFM approved me to fly to my baby shower at 23 weeks. It was a 2 hour flight. I was told to drink water so that I was urinating every 30 minutes and to make sure to get up and walk every 30 minutes to avoid blood clots.
  • i would not fly at 25 weeks- no way... i didn't want to fly at all with either of my pgs- but esp the twin one - and thankfully my doc agreed that I shouldn't fly when my company tried to make me go to a meeting - i was 20w - he wrote me a note to get out of it.

A family friend lost her twins around 23w when she flew... it happened years ago and has always stuck with me.

sure- many women fly and it's fine- but the way i see it- there's nothing that would make me risk it.

  • I had an uncomplicated twin pregnancy  - and was told no traveling after 28 weeks.  I flew for a shower at 24 weeks, and then a 5-hour car ride at 28 weeks, but then stayed put after that.
  • Thanks ladies - I'm not going to risk it. My MIL wanted to fly us in for Christmas, but we'll decline.

  • I was supposed to go to Florida for t-giving but MFM told me I could if I really wanted to but would prefer me to stay home- I decided not to risk anything  so we cancelled. Oh and I am 20 weeks.
  • I flew at 19 weeks and was fine.  My OB okay'd it and wrote me a letter if I were to get stopped at the airport.  I'm now 22 weeks and I would think by 25-26 weeks I wouldn't want to travel if I didn't have to.

  • My OB said no travel after 28 weeks, so we were originally planning to go OOT (3 hr flight) for Christmas (27w). After hearing "24 weeks" from several people on here, though, we cancelled those plans and are staying home. I doubt I'll do any travel from here on out. Just not worth the risk to us.

  • I flew at 24-25 wks.  My OB let me fly then, but didn't want me to fly after that.  If you do go, make sure you get up and walk on the plane.  The worst part of the trip was that my back got sore from sitting in the uncomfortable seats for too long.
  • Ok, my OB must be ultra relaxed because she said as long as I was feeling good, I could travel up to 34 weeks.  Unless she momentarily forgot I was having twins or something.  That was kind of surprising to me.

She told me that my only concern would be discomfort and not having immediate access to my medical records if something did happen.

We are planning on driving 3.5 hours the week before Christmas to see the IL's and will be staying 3 days.  I'll be 32 weeks.  As of now, I feel fine, so I hope things are still good a month from now.

  • There is no way I would have flown at that gestation -- not because of any doctor restrictions either.  At 25/26 weeks I hit a wall, HARD and I was miserable walking or sitting for any extended period of time (extended meaning even just walking to the far end of the grocery store to get milk).

I would honestly not recommend doing it just for your comfort, even if you doc allows it.

  • My parents are coming here for December because I cant fly. My OB said no flying after 22 weeks. And, I would not want to fly anyways because I'd be worried! Even more....
