Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If your child didn't have a bowel movement for a weeks..

did they sleep horribly at night?

Lil Sal had a bowel movement last Sunday-we started rice cereal then, so I am not sure if that is what has caused him not to have a BM.

He still has not gone. I tried giving him a 1:1 of pear juice/ water and he drank maybe 1oz. He is EBF and just didn't like the taste and kept pushing the bottle away. I was going to try giving it to him with a medication syringe?

He has slept horribly the past 2 nights-up 3-4x; I can imagine how uncomfortable he is. I am really hoping he goes today..I even have a call into the Ped already..but not sure what they will be able to do??

Re: If your child didn't have a bowel movement for a weeks..

  • When DD was first home from the hospital, she went 4 days before she pooped and the only reason we did was b/c the pedi had to do manual stimulation in his office.  He also recommended that we give her a sliver of a Dulcolax suppository if she didn't poop again in 24 hours.  We did this off and on for about a week and now she is doing just fine.

Your poor baby!  A week seems like a long time to me.  Ouchie!

  • The iron in the rice cereal is probably constipating your LO. I would stop feeding it to him ASAP until he poops. One week on solids is WAY too long...one week of no poop if he was literally just getting BM would be okay. Have you tried dark karo syrup or a suppository? Your kid is going to have one rock solid poop, is my guess.

  • I would bet it is the rice cereal.  I heard it can be binding, it is making my LO gassy.  I think I am going to try oatmeal instead.
  • You might want to try glycerin suppositories.  They make them for babies.  And I would talk to your pedi about switching to oatmeal and ditching the rice cereal (which is probably no doubt your problem).
  • Thanks. With my daughter the Ped said they don't worry after 10 days..but now my son is getting uncomfortable and spitting up more. And with the holiday coming up I don't want to be stuck wo a Dr!!!
  • We only did the rice cereal on Sat and Sun (last week) and nothing last week at all-just breast milk. My poor guy!!!

Yeah, that's just a guideline if they're acting normal.  If they're in pain, something needs to be done.  Hope your little guy feels better soon!

That's strange...every pedi I've been to (3 so far because of moving) said that LOs should really be pooping every day...even EBF ones. Your kid is literally going to have a huge rock solid poop...my DS did after not pooping for one day after starting solids. I would do something ASAP or the problem will keep getting worse.

Poor guy. My pedi recommended these also when we had problems.

Also - with the juice - my DS hated it at the beginning also - but my sitter got him to take it finally when she warmed it up.  It was a temperature thing for him. Maybe try this?  We had to give him juice about every day for a while since he had problems having a daily BM.

Ours said 7-10 days can be normal, but they'd like to see them going everyday or at least every 2 days.

7-10 days is the general guideline when on BM/formula only...once on solids, that changes.

Oh gotcha!  Did not know this.

  • Try prune juice..my guy gets like that a lot...but we don't let him go more than two days..he tends to be in pain. So we give him prune juice mixed with a little water and in a few hours the problem is solved. =o)
  • When he started eating rice cereal he should start pooping more. I am sure that he is uncomfortable.  BM is almost completely digested and leaves little to poop out.  Rice cereal is not all digested and leaves more to poop and causes constipation.  I have been told by more than one pedi that iron does NOT cause constitpation rather it is the addition of food to the diet. I would definitely use the Fleet suppostiory to 'clear the path' and then give him prune juice every day.  Good luck.  My older son had this problem a lot!
