high FSH on Day3 at 27y/o

I'm not really sure what to make of this... other than getting a second opinion...

Day3 blood work revealed FSH of 20.3 (which subsequently took me out of consideration for a study offering free IVF) and the nurse said IVF probably wouldn't work with a level like that either (pow! right in the face).  I'm only 27!  Really?

Has anyone else dealt with high FSH levels?  What did you do?  I'm definitely going to get a second opinion, but wanted some thoughts from all of you.

 Thanks :)

Re: high FSH on Day3 at 27y/o

  • My BF has high FSH levels.  She was told she would never get pregnant by her first RE....she ended up getting pregnant with #1 naturally (she was seeing an acupuncturist so thinks that helped).  On #2, she did IVF and had success on her first try.  You just need to see an RE that understands how different hormones affect cycles.

I have the opposite issue - extremely high E2 levels on CD2 but apparently having high of one hormone, means the other (FSH) is suppressed.  Regardless, none of the REs, I've seen were concerned about it in terms of getting me pregnant but it just meant it would mean to treat me slightly differently knowing my hormones are out of whack.

  • Definitely go try and find an RE that is high FSH friendly. There are so many other things that the clinic needs to consider, FSH is is just one indicator. My RE told me at the beginning of our journey that "age trumps everything" and you are still very young! Don't just look at that number and give up hope. I've seen IVF success stories from people with higher numbers than that right here on this board!

I have very high FSH levels, much higher than you, and my 27th birthday isn't until January. Things obviously didn't work out for me with my own eggs (see siggy), but my clinic was amazingly supportive and was willing to try pretty much anything. Start with a new RE that's willing to work with you and go from there.

    Good luck!

  • I'm really sorry you got this news.  I know how devastating this can be.  It seems like some doctors really focus on FSH, and I know it's important, but I think it's necessary to look at the whole picture (antral follice count, AMH, how you respond to stims, etc.).  I would also recommend getting to a high-FSH-friendly RE.  I know Dr. Davis at Cornell is very highly recommended for this problem.  It also seems like the SIRM clinics have some good approaches for people with ovarian issues (estrogen priming, etc.).  I wish you the best!  Do not give up hope!

  • thank you everyone!  So glad to know there other people out there that have gone through what I am right now... and come out on top!

Rachel - did your doctor suggest a possibility of Fragile X Syndrome and want to do genetic testing for you?  That was what she suggested to me in the sentence following "you have very high FSH, much higher than I would expect for a 27 y/o"  Needless to say, that didn't sit very well with me.  I said I didn't want it done and their response was "You don't want to know if you could possibly pass on a genetic disorder to your children?" - nope I don't! At least not that one, I'm an occupational therapist and work with children with developmental disabilities every day... they are just as important and special as a "normal" child!  It wouldn't change my decision (and desire) to have a child.

  • That sounds like a really rough appointment.  The only thing I would mention about the genetic testing is that they can do screening of the embryos (when doing IVF) if you or your husband are carriers for certain genetic disorders, so that you can choose to transfer the unaffected embryos.  Of course that is a very personal decision, but some people are at risk for having a baby with a very serious or life-threatening condition, so that is one option for them.  Just some thoughts.  I hope that's not offensive in any way.  Take care!

  • absolutely not offensive!  The only thing that makes that conversation more rough is that it was over the phone with the nurse... not even the doctor.  the doctor is only in the office close to me on mondays and wednesdays.
  • Definitely get another opinion. Its only one indicator and you have your age working in your favor. My  FSH was close to 20, i have endo and blocked tubes. My antral follicle count was 3!!! My doctor told me I had less than a 10% chance of success. But my little girl is proof that high FSH is not the death sentence its made out to be. Oh, I took wheatgrass and went for accupuncture weekly prior to the IVF cycle.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, I did get tested for Fragile X. It was negative for me, so we don't know what led to the POF. Just one of the rare ones, I guess!  I completely understand not wanting to get it done and I agree that it should be your choice.
