Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

21 lbs at one years old?

Dr. said DD was under weight, she only gained 6 oz between 9-12 months but is tall 31 1/2 inches and looks healthy to me (and everyone else around us)

Dr is saying she possibly has a gluten intolerance but I have seen no signs of that as she has no digestion problems isn't irritable has  no constipation/diarrhea/stomach aches.

Do you think this is a normal weight? I feel comfortable with it but needed 2nd opinions.

Re: 21 lbs at one years old?

  • Sounds normal to me, Kian was 22 pounds at his 1 year checkup.

  • It sounds like a normal weight to me. I would think your doctor has some reason to be concerned though. Could you get a second opinion from a different pedi?

  • DS was 20 lbs at his one year check up Dr. said it was fine. At 20 months he is 24 lbs.
  • Sounds normal to me, Lydia was 22lbs and everyone says she's big.

  • Liliana was 18 pounds at her twelve month appointment, and her doctor was totally fine with it. She's on her own growth curve and very healthy. She is just now 21 pounds at sixteen months.

  • I wouldnt think the Dr. would have anything to be concerned about, she had asked me about her eating habits, said she looked healthy and happy, and then when she looked at the chart a few minutes later and saw her weight said she was in the 48th percentile and that was the bad part. She said everything else was healthy and good except that she was in the 48th percentile for weight.

  • I don't expect my dd to weigh  much more than that at 1.  I don't understand why your doc would assume a gluten intolerance based on her weight? Were there other symptoms?
  • Jeremy had his 1 year last week and when the nurse weighed him she said, "Oh, he's only 20 pounds", but that's all that was said about it, so I guess they weren't that concerned.  BTW, my BIL's girlfriend's son is 16 months and only weighs 23 pounds, so I think your DD is fine.

  • It would depend on her growth chart. Is she following the same pattern or did she drop dramatically? Both my kids were 20lbs at 1yr.

  • Sounds totally normal to me, Jackson gained very little between 9 and 12 months, he started walking and they just don't gain as much then. He was 20 at 1 year and 21 at 15 months (also 32 inches). Maybe he has another reason to be concerned....or is just conservative and double checking things. not a bad thing for a Dr. to be but may cause you some unnessesary worry.

You know your child best as far as eating, diapers, etc. but I would think if she is still gaining and growing on her own curve than I wouldn't be concerned.

    Good luck......

  • Exactly what DD was at her 1 yr. 21 lbs 6 oz and 31 1/2 in tall. All babies are diff.
  • My DD is 26 months and she weighs an even 20 lbs so by my pedis scale you child isn't under weight

  • Hahaha doesn't sound under weight to me.  My DS is 27 lbs at 13 months.  He gained 4 lbs between 9-13 months...LOL We have opposite babies.
  • She was always in the 90+% for weight up to her 6 month appt then she started to slow down I just assumed from learning to scoot, crawl, boogie etc.

    18 lb 9 oz at 6 months

    20 lb 10 oz at 9 months

and 21 lbs this time. I just thought it was normal for weight to drop off a bit once they learned to move.

DS has been low for his weight since about 6 months.  He hovered around the 5th percentile and made it up to the 10th percentile just at his last appointment (18 months).  The pediatrician wasn't concerned at all because he's following the curve - he isn't dropping off the charts.  He's eating well and everything else checks out ok, so we're not worried.  BTW - he's in the 70th percentile for height.  Our little string bean!!!

  • My son is 31 pounds.  21 doesn't sound little, either.
  • I wish my lo was in the 48th percentile for weight. She's 17 pounds now and in the 3rd percentile. We go again tomorrow for a weight check. I wouldn't worry about your dd, if your doctor was really worried they would order blood work or weight checks. Every child is different and as long as she's eating well and not losing weight then everything should be fine.
  • Lily was just under 21 lbs at a year. Our pedi tried to freak me out because Lily only gained a pound between 9 months and 12 months and dropped from the 50th to the 33rd percentile.  I argued that she grew 3 inches and started crawling was eating fine and was perfectly healthy.  She told me to schedule a weight check in 6 weeks and I ignored her.

At her 15 moth apt she was 22.3 lbs and back up in the 50th percentile.  I admit that I felt a bit smug. ;)

  • My 21 month old is 22 lbs. My DD didnt even hit 20 lbs until she was 26 months. At 4 years old, she's only 32 lbs now. Someone's got to be the smallest :)

Your child sounds very average for weight (and IS average according the growth chart %) and you're right, they do often slow down once they start moving a lot.

  • my DD was 16lb5oz at her 12 mos. checkup.  She is a little peanut but doctor was still okay with her size, just said that since H and I are thin, that she is going to be little too.
  • Maybe she's just on a lower growth curve. DS was 21.5 lbs and 31.5 in at one year.

  • DS turned 1 yaer yesterday and he weighs 21 lbs
  • Sounds fine to me.  Liev didn't make it past 22 pounds until a few weeks ago.
  • A friend of mine child weighs 21 lbs and shes 22 months old.   You're dd is normal.
  • Is she a breastfed baby> My Pedi said most BFed babies have a drop in weight gain at about that time for whatever reason and then pick back up once Milk is introduced...
  • That actually sounds big to me. DD was 17 lbs. 8 oz. at 12 months and didn't reach 21 lbs. until 18 months. Our pedi hasn't been concerned.

  • Your DD and my DS are the exact same weight and height and pedi had no issues. He is slightly above the 50% percentile. Sounds perfectly normal to me.

  • DD was 20 pounds 6 oz at 1 years old . . Dr didn't say anything about the weight.
  • Sounds like a very normal weight to me too. My DS was 20.9 lbs st 12 months and his pedi said he was perfectly fine as long as he was moving upwards on the growth chart.

  • Sounds okay to me.  DD was 20 lbs 1 oz at her 12 month appointment.  The doctor said that put her in the 30th percentile and was not worried at all.

  • Sounds normal to me. DS was 20 3/4 lbs at 12 months - I believe he fell into the 30th percentile for weight.

  • DS was only 21 lbs 4 oz at 1 year and did not gain a single oz between 12 months and 15 months.  At 18 months he's 31 inches and only 22 lbs 8 oz.  He's dropped from 50th percentile in weight to 10th percentile since 9 months but remains in the 50th for both height and head size.  My pedi wasn't concerned at all.  She said its very normal anytime between 1 year and 2 years to have a significant drop off in weight gain.  She is only concerned with height and head size growth that is not proportinate.  My BFF's DS gained a total of 1 lb from 12 months to 24 months.  Without any other symptoms, I wouldn't think she was gluten intolerant.

  • My Dd was 28 3/4 in and 19lb 15oz, she only gained 4oz from her 9 month appt. My pedi told me she is 50% and not to worry.

  • DS was about the same size and weight at his 12 month. 20 lbs 11 oz and 31 inches.  Long and lean!  The pedi said there shouldn't be anything to be concerned about unless DS isn't eating well.  He only gained about 2-3 pounds from 2 - 12 months.  FWIW, DH and I are on the thinner side so the pedi just thinks it's his genetics kicking in.

  • That's more than my son weighed at 12 months...he's now 16 months at only 21.5 lbs. I think your doctor is overreacting,

  • Sounds normal to me, DS was 25lbs at 1 year.  He's also in the 95% for height and he's a chunkster.
  • My DD had the same measurements at her 12 mo appt and had actually lost 2-3 oz at her 15 mo. Pedi isn't the least bit concerned. He said she looks healthy and is just skinny. He also said right around the time they start walking it isn't uncommon for a baby to lose weight or gain very little.
  • My DD is 19 months and just now weighs 21 lbs. She is 33 inches. I wouldn't worry about her weight as long as she has energy to play and looks healthy she is okay! My Pedi put my DD on boost because she burns so many calories because she is so active. My DD loves it but she still isn't gaining any weight just extra calories to burn.
