What age did you move away from home?

I am finding it hard to believe that seriously out of all my immediate cousins that are all over 21 that I am the ONLY one that is no longer living with my parents!  I went to college when I was 18 and except for summer break I have never moved back in with my parents.  I worked 3 jobs when I graduated but I was determined to make it on my own.  Three of my cousins are over 32, live with their parents, have jobs, and pay NO rent. One of the cousins at home still gets woken up each morning by his mom to go to freaking work.  I'm sorry I just don't get it.

  • Initially 18, moved back when I was about 20, left right before I turned 21 for good. Possibly moving back again now that I'm 30. Lord I hope I'm not there for long.

  • I would call them freeloaders. I moved out to go to college at 18 (still supported by my parents) and moved back in for two years from 22-24 after college. My DH and I bought out house when i was 24 and I moved out.

  • 17.  Went to college, and only returned home that first summer after freshman year.

I'm proud to have never been a boomerang child!

  • i moved away when i was 18, which i wouldn't have done any other way but with the way the economy is these days i can see why some kids have to live with their parents a little longer.

  • I moved out when I was 18.

DH and I moved into my parents house again when we were in our late 20s, but we were moving back to my home state and opening a business -- so it was sort of a temporary thing to help us get settled and on our feet.

  • 20.  And that means no help with bills whatsoever.  I know plenty of people who "moved out" but they had help with all their bills and rent.
  • I guess i should have posted that none of them ever flipping left, it's not like any of my cousins fell on hard times, they just never left the nest.
  • At 18 I went off to university. That was pretty much the end of me living at home. But my home life was crappy so I'm sure that played into the decision to get away from my mother.
  • 17, as soon as I graduated from high school. My parents would have let me live there during college, but after that, or if I hadn't gone to college, they would have charged me rent. Never in a million years would I move back in, unless I had some terrible life tragedy and I needed to get back on my feet.
  • 18 to go to college.  Came home 1 summer break.  Stayed with them for 7 months after graduating and again for 6 months after a car accident that I shattered my leg (my parents chose to move to to their house so my Mom could help me).
  • 22 I think it was

  • I moved out ON my 18th birthday. I was totally fed up with my mom and she threatened to call the cops on me if I left any earlier.

I was roomies with my cousin for awhile, lived with an aunt for 6 months, but other than that, I have supported myself. Oh and I worked that entire time - my aunt insisted I stay with her until I could afford to live by myself after my cousin started having drug parties.

This.  I moved into the dorms the day before my 18th birthday.  I went home one summer after freshman year, and then never again.  I also had a job (a pretty intense one) that summer.

  • I moved away when I left for college at 18.  I went back for the summer during all 4 years of college as well as the first year I was in graduate school.  Otherwise, I've been on my own.

  • Dorms in college at 18 and then moved from WI to CA when I was 19 and left everyone behind.  Amazing how fast you grow up in that situation.

Wow! I don't care how lazy I would want to be, I could not imagine still living with my parents if I had the option not to.

My parents are great people but I just can't imagine not having my own.

  • I was 15. We were living in Norway at the time and I went to an English International school that was 3 hours away from my parents. It was not a boarding school so all the students just got our own apartments around town. It was nice but I was responsible about it so nothing crazy happened and I went home almost every weekend and holiday. I never moved back in
  • At 15 I spent a year in France.  Then I went to university at 17.  But I think you question is financial independence.  The answer to that would be 22 that is when I got married and when I got my first adult job.
  • 19. About 3 weeks before I got married. I've not lived with my parents since. I've seen a few cases where moving BACK in was a good idea (after a divorce to save money or losing a job & having your roommate move out of state without warning) but I couldn't imagine STILL living at home, with no desire to move out (my exBIL has a chem eng degree & still lives at home at 35 years old, never moved out).
  • When I was 17, my dad was transferred to CA, and I stayed behind in our home state to finish my senior year of HS.

So I was a young'un. ?But I did move back home for one year after college between graduation and our wedding.?

  • 16 for college and never moved back in.
  • 22 yrs old.  My Mom would have loved if I stayed much longer.  Even to this day she tells me she misses me - I'm only 25 minutes away!

  • i was 13, almost 14 when i moved out of my dad's, then when i was 17 i moved into my dad's gf house for my senior year of high school only, i graduated at 17 and have never lived at "home" since.
  • I moved into college when I was 17 and went back home for breaks but when I was 21, MH ( then BF) and I moved into an apartment together and that was that.

edit- however after 3 yrs of being on our own MH decided to start his own business so we moved into his parents basement. we lived there for almost 3 years but we saved enough money to get married go on our honeymoon, buy a house and have a baby. we even paid them rent as well.

  • went away to college at 18 and lived at home during the summers.

Moved home after graduation for 5 months then moved out for 8 months.  Moved back home after leaving my ex who I was living with.  Lived at home again until I was 27.  So officially out at 27.  I thought about moving out earlier, but wanted to save as much money as possible (especially since I lost money when I left my ex and my condo :( )

  • I went to a local college for my Associates, so I moved out when I was 19, no, 20? and went into the dorms, then my own apt. Came home for summers between jr/sr and after graduating, and HAD to get out.

DH (then BF) and I bought our first house when I was 22.

  • I was 17. My brother was still living there at around age 27. Not paying rent, not really working. I feel like more and more parents are enabling this behavior. I couldn't wait to get out of my parents house, I wanted to be independent and was sick of their rules. For him, there were no rules. They made it way too pleasant for him to stick around.

  • I moved out when I was 24.  I did go to college full time and worked part time but the college was near home so there was no need for me to move out.  For me, 25 was the cut off age limit when it was time to move out.  I did not want to be the 25 year old still living with her parents.

Both my older brother and sister moved out when they were 18 and both of them had to move back in at least once.  I never had to move back in and I think it's because I waited to get my life in order and to finish college before moving out.

  • I moved out when I went to college at 18.  There is no way my parents would have let me stay at home, or come back, without paying rent.  We grew up knowing that was the deal -- when you're 18, you're an adult and are expected to figure out how to take care of yourself.

That said, my parents were willing to pay whatever it took to finance college, so although I paid for a lot of it, I wasn't completely on my own there.

  • I moved back in with my parents just after college because I owed a ton of money in student loans and credit cards. I lived with them for a year, worked my butt off to pay down some debt and save money, then moved to Florida when I was a few months shy of 23 (I graduated from college at 21). I've been on my own since.

  • I graduated college, came back home to save money and start my first job. Bought my first house and moved out for good after 5 months of saving. I was 23.

  • I guarantee you there is a 40 year old man reading this post right now that lives at home with his mother.
  • Left for college at 18, spent the first two summers at home but never went back to live. It probably helped that after college I went right into grad school, so I was not close by.
  • I moved out on my 18th birthday. However I ended up back there a few months later because I was preg with DS. I was on my own again when he was about 8 months old.
  • 17.  I graduated high school three days shy of my 17th birthday.  Moved out that summer to go to college.

    LMAO, i agree

  • 16  almost 17.
  • I moved out and got my own apartment when I was 18.  The place was over top of the flower shop that I worked at in HS, I was very friendly with the landlord/owner and he gave me a great deal on rent.   And since I was working full time, I could afford it.

I lived on my own for a year and a half and then moved back home to pay off some bills and save $.  Shortly after that, I got pregnant with my daughter and stayed at home (I was a single parent) until I was 27, when I left and bought my first house.
