3 week old baby eating 4 ounces, is that too much?

It sure seems so to me but he's been getting hungry after only an hour and half after eating 3 ounces of formula (he used to last 3 hours!) so we're thinking about increasing to 4 ounces. It just seems like alot to me though.

  • no.. its not too much.. ds ate that much when he was 3 weeks.  if they are hungry...... feed them!

  • maybe part of the 3 week growth spurt?
  • If your LO is hungry and taking the 4 oz with no problem that's great! I had to stop getting caught up with what she "should" be eating and just watch her cues and feed her what works.

  • DD was eating about 4 oz at 3 weeks.  She wasn't taking a solid four oz at every feeding, but she was doing 2-4oz every 2-3 hours.  She hasn't increased much since then (I figured she'd keep increasing it), but she's getting more consistent.  We've just recently upped her to about 5oz.  Then again, my dd is a big girl...lol
  • I was told that he will let me know if he needs more. I was going through the same thing with mine. I started 4 oz. around 3 weeks. Babies know when they are hungry.

  • I asked my pedi about this because DS is increasing the amount he eats pretty much every day, and he assured me that it's impossible to over-feed an infant.  If he's hungry, you can feel ok about feeding him.

  • Might be a growth spurt. Try 3.5oz and see if he spits up more that usual after that. If he does, it's too much. I wouldn't jump to 4 right away though.

Marley is 8 weeks and is drinking 3.5oz every 3 hours, every baby is different though.

  • DD was taking 4oz at 4 weeks. They'll tell you when it's too much.
  • When we left the hospital with Sabrina she was eating 3 oz.  We were at 4 oz with in a week.  I was told we were over feeding her but everything I read about how they will act when they are over fed was NOT how Sabrina was acting.  She was fine...she was HUNGRY.

She still has quite the healthy appetite.  I say as long as they are acting comfortable after eating and not throwing up too much then you're fine.  Just make sure though that your LO isn't showing signs of reflux, and that after eating they aren't acting miserable.

  • Thanks everyone! Sounds like he's just a growing boy!

  • DD is a few days younger then your DS and she will take anywhere from 3-4 oz at at time. She's 10 lbs.

If it helps, I read that they should take 2.5 oz times their weight in formula per day/24 hours.. so for my DD, that's 25 oz in a day which = about 3-4 oz per bottle every 3 or so hours.

At 3 weeks was when my LO consistantly ate between 4-5 oz.
