any ideas on holiday gifts for teachers?

I was just reading an article in a parenting magazine that a teacher wrote.  one of her comments was that gifts are not necessary but if you must, a gift card in any amount is great and she mentioned not to buy candles because they get too many of them, and she preferred no baked goods.  HA!  talk about a straight shooter.

LO daycare has a bunch of teachers not just one so I need a simple, affordable idea for at least 5 of them.  What do you spend?  I was thinking a bath and body works product but then what if they have skin allergies?

  • My best friend is a teacher and she would prefer a $5 starbucks card over pretty much anything else. =)

  • Last year I gave Walmart gift cards because I didn't know them that well (we don't have Target).  If DS was still going to be in daycare this year I was going to do these insulated lunch bags.  I think they're really cute and decent price.

  • I was a teacher before sahm and honestly, teachers get so much lotion. I have bags and bags of bath and body stuff (although I liked the hand soap from there) I agree with pp...$5 to Starbucks is the best.

  • No mugs, no baked goods (unless you personally know the teacher), no lotion or soap. I would personally love a gift card to WM/Target/SBux, or if you have a local teacher supply store.
  • My friend is a teacher and said gift cards are the best. That's what I'm going to do.  I'll give $10 gift cards to Sbux (he has 2 teachers).

  • Agreed- gift cards to target, starbucks, dunkin donuts, panera- anything like that- $5 is plenty since you have to get 5 of them- or, if it was me, I can never get enough chocolate or a bottle of wine!
  • My mom is a teacher and gets more crap shaped like apples with her name on it than anything else.  She would ALWAYS prefer a GC, even in a small amount.  Often, they want walmart gift cards - many spend their own $$ to buy things for their classrooms, and this can help offset the cost.

I am planning to make gift bags with xmas candy (reeses peanut butter cups, hersheys minis, etc.) with a $5 or $10 starbucks or target GC inside.

  • I think GCs to a bookstore or teacher supply store would be nice. I might stay away from bath and body products because of allergies or personal preference. I have had one teacher tell me that one of the best holiday presents she's received was a homemade frozen lasagna. She loved it because it meant one more meal during the holidays that she didn't have to worry about. I thought that was pretty clever, though some people might think a little strange.

  • I was a fourth grade teacher before i decided to be a sahm this year.  I can guarantee you that these teachers do not need mugs, candles, lotion, wooden apple crap with your name on it, candycanes, hot chocolate mixes, homemade goods and anything else of this nature.  I would appreciate a gift card or somthing for my classroon, but what I really truly like most was a very nice thank you card.  So often, teachers are not thanked for their work.  I understand it is a job and lots of people do not get thanked for their work, but they deal with a lot of ridiculous parents and situations (and while you are probably not one of them) it is nice to know some people appreciate the work you do.
  • I'm a teacher and LOVE getting gift cards.  Some of my favorites have been from a bookstore, Subway (great to run out and grab a quick lunch), and Target.  Hand sanatizer from Bath and Body Works is another good bet (especially this year)!

I normally throw away any baked goods - you never know how they were prepared.  Candles and lotions normally get donated to Goodwill every year.

Forgot to add another good idea...Breakfast!  I had a student a couple of years ago bring in breakfast from Panera for the teachers on the team.  We had bagels, cream cheese, OJ, coffee, etc.  I did the same thing for our daycare last year and they really liked it!
