Upstate NY Babies

milk drinking babies

I haven't really looked into this too much yet but I'm just wondering your thoughts.

I usually buy the hormone free kind from Dash's bc I don't see it in Wegmans (I know they have the Hilcrest kind in Roc but never seen it in Bflo).  G goes to daycare 2 days/week where they will supply regular milk (she would drink about 12 ounces/week while there) if I don't send it in with her.  I need to look into how important organic/hormone free milk really is.

So I'm wondering; what kind of milk do you give to your LO?  Is the organic kind pretty much the same as the hormone free?  Is this something important to you?

Re: milk drinking babies

  • I send Charlie's milk to daycare even though they provide regular. He drinks soy for the most part now (better for his asthma), but even when he does have cow's milk I send in the hormone free kind (also from Dash's). Its important to me and I'm packing his lunch anyways so its easy to throw a sippy in his lunch box.

  • We give Evan Organic whole milk. Hormone free only applies to the hormones given to the cows, whereas organic applies to that AND the pesticides added to the grass/food the cows eat.

We started with Horizon Organic Milk...but I have read that they have complaints against them that they aren't really organic because of the time their cows are inside...or something like that.

So we still get that (since we still consider it better than regular milk) but right now we have the Wegman's brand in the fridge.

  • I only buy organic or from a dairy that is not officially certified organic, but does not participate in hormones, antibiotics, etc.  My son's diet is extremely important to me and we buy/eat healthy/organic as much as possible.  It's expensive, don't get me wrong, but totally worth the added expense.   Cooking/food preparation takes up a huge portion of my time, but it's critical to me that he get the very best, especially right now.
  • Currently we buy Byrne's Dairy Hormone Free from Sam's Club.  While we'd prefer to buy organic, we go through so much that it just isn't in our budget right now.  I know it may not be that big of a difference to some, but to us every dollar counts.
  • Ummm I guess I'm kinda the odd mom out. We use just plain old regular Wegmans whole milk. He hasn't grown any third eyeball yet ;)

  • I was buying just regular milk, but my DH really wanted to do organic.  So, the hormone-free was our compromise.  Plus, they sell it for a great price at Sam's Club, which is where he works, so he's on milk duty!  Makes it easy when that's all we need and he can bring it home instead of me running out :)

  • I will give Eve regular whole milk when she is old enough.  I thought that I heard that all the Byrne Dairy milk was hormone free though.

  • Ladies......virtually ALL milk is hormone free! Even the store brand, which is name brand in a store brand container!

Bryne Dairy and Upstate Farms are the only milk distributors in WNY, they do not add hormones to their milk. Hormones are found naturally in milk, adding them has proven to decrease milk output overtime. No, it is not organic....but it does not have the added hormones that some are worried about. Some lables say it, others don't....it is a marketing ploy. If you call them directly and ask, they will tell you it is all the same!

Wegmans, Tops, Aldi, BJ's, Sams, etc are all filled by the 2 above! I refuse to pay $6 a gallon for milk!

  • We give Justin Wegman's milk, though I have thought about switching.  I would need to do some research though.  I only thought to switch after my sister told me my niece was maturing faster than she should be and her Dr. recommended she switch milk.  I honestly hadn't heard of that before.

To each their own but sometimes I swear to God if they put an "Organic" sticker on a rock people would run out to buy it for their babies to eat.

If we have a girl I will be extra careful of what milk she drinks. I have heard this many times...
