How do you sleep...?

How do you sleep in the same room as a newborn?  I *really* think part of our problem is that I hear *every.single.little.thing* because during the day, when DS naps (and he's not ON me) he will sleep for an hour and a half or 2 or more... but I'm not usually in the same room.  I'll turn on the monitor and leave the room.  I start to get anxious if he makes the smallest noise, so if he's in the room, he's probably picking up some of that tension and waking up a little.  (Make sense?)  But I don't want to let him sleep in another room yet- I know that's another SIDS prevention thing, for babies to sleep in the same room.

  • Well, DD didn't sleep like, ever in the beginning ... so we were just all up together! lol  After two months or so they stop being so noisy.

  • ugh I seriously could never sleep with him around. ?I was ALWAYS checking to see if he was breathing. ?We had him in the bassinet until 8 or 10 weeks. ?6 weeks was at the other side of the room. ?Then he was in his crib. ?We didn't bed share until 9 months. ?At that point I wasn't worried as much. ?Of course I still worry from time to time, but he can fend for himself better now lol

  • DS#2 is sleeping in his room for the first time tonight (i've never heard that them sleeping in the same room is a medically recommended SIDS prevention tactic, not that it doesn't make sense).  we moved DS#1 into his room at 4 weeks for that exact reason.  i couldn't sleep with him in the same room as he was so noisy.  i'm a very light sleeper. DS#2 is the same way but i lasted longer with him.  i think i'm just more used to not sleeping well now!  but anyway, with DS#1 i remember that it made a HUGE difference.  he slept better and we slept better so...we'll see how tonight goes for us!

  • DD was in our room until she was 6 months.  DS made it to 3 months and down the hall he went.  He sleeps better in his room and so do I.  I really believe we kept each other up.  I like you would wake to any noise, and at times in my half-awake stupor would check on him and wake him when he wasn't really awake as much as making loud sleeping noises.  I would have liked him to be in our room longer, but the sleep deprivation wasn't working for me.  What we do is actually start him out in his own room and when he wakes for his first feeding bring him down the hall to our room to co-sleep the rest of the night.  He sleeps about 4 hours that first stretch, so I usually get a solid 2-4 hours based upon when I head to bed.

  • Like some of the other posters, we couldn't sleep with the baby in the room. They make so much noise, and then you wake up worrying that they need something, so you peek in at them, and probably pester them & wake them up! We literally had him in the room 1 night & then put him in his own crib; I am *sure* we all slept better as a result. We actually left our bedroom door open as well as his (the doors were perhaps 10 ft. apart) and just listened with the monitor. I think you just have to see what works best for you & your particular baby. HTH
  • I think around the 1 month mark I became so tired that I just slept through it. It didn't matter... unless he was crying I slept through it.
  • That's why I ended up moving DS to his own room at 8 weeks.  He was starting to sleep longer at that time and I felt like we were all waking each other.  I know it's not for everyone but it was definitely the right move for us.
