Today at work i got a call from a patient and I pulled up their account to see why their insurance was not paying thier claim..
only to find in the system we had the pt name as Hillary Billy
but the pt corrected me and told me her first name was not Hillary it was Hill, and her middle name was Billy..
i totally thought she was pulling a prank! But sure enough she faxed me a copy of her insurance card with that name on it..
who would do that to their child?!
Re: The WORST name i have ever heard!
as long as i don't put their last name it's fine i would think
i couldn't resist, it's terrible!
Not when giving that context. The random name possibly with NO way of how it came by her knowledge, but absolutely not all the info given.
Oh please, there are privacy laws for a reason.
Exactly. I thought I asked the question politely and OP did not seem to be offended by it.
::snort;: I am just stating that no you should not have posted how you got that information. It is inappropriate but, hey thanks for making me laugh.
I'm thinking if the OP occupation is known on this board (I don't know since I'm not on here too much) and the type of doctor she works for that maybe it would be pushing it a bit. but I don't think it would be a true legal violation without a last name and without the type of dr office it was. to say sally went to a dr's office today can't be that damaging.
however, if we could figure out that OP works for an RE or an oncologist, along with their location (sorry I haven't looked) and since that name is quite distinguished, yeah, I would prob be more careful.
If OP wasn't sensitive to sharing that sally went to her dr, then I'm going to bet her dr is not RE or oncology but prob a GP, dentist or OBGYN? Dunno, just bored and enjoyed thinking through the risk.
I think it is very low risk, however, I agree that you don't really want to push the envelope with legally protected data.
The only "privacy law" that she could have violated would be internal to her office/department (which isn't actually a law, it's contractual) or HIPAA - and since that is not "protected health information" and didn't actually disclose anything other than a name --- would it matter if she said there was a patient named Melissa Rose?? -- she didn't violate anything.
Any yes, i'm a lawyer.
Someone called the office today w/ the name Steven Stevenson. Really.
