Need advice Nuero Surgeon for baby

Hi everyone,

This may be kinda long so I apologize ahead of time. So I noticed that my little guy had a bump on the back of his head. I asked my pedi. about it at his 2 month app. and we went for a skull xray. The xray did not show anything, but there was some worry that his skull sutures are closing early. We then had an appoinment w/ a Pediatric Nuerosurgen at CHOA, He has ordered a CT scan which we will be doing on Nov. 3. I spoke to my pediatrician about getting a 2nd opionion if in fact his skull is forming too quickly and she basically said that treatment is surgery and that the Neuro surgeon group at CHOA is great. My mom keeps hounding me to find another doc now and schedule an appointment just to get another opinion. So my question is do any of you know another hospital that u would recommend? Or do I just go w/ what the doc at CHOA says. I'm not from here so I'm not that familiar with the hospitals here. I'm so confused, scared, and stressed and we haven't even had the CT yet! Thanks for reading this.

  • The Nuero group at CHOA is outstanding.  There is no other hospital I would take my child to in Atlanta. I really liked Dr. Reisner from the group at CHOA.

If you want to get a second opinion, you can always travel to the childrens hospital in Macon or Augusta.  Keep in mind that those doctors send many of their cases to Atlanta to be seen.

  • I just wanted to say that CHOA is one of the best hospitals for kids in the country and I would be hesitant to go anywhere else.

We are not in Atlanta any more--down here in Orlando and Aerin has an apt with her Neurologist tomorrow.  Our neurologist was head of pediatric neurosurgery at a hospital in Ohio.  I can ask him for a recomendation for one in Atlanta---in case there is one specific doctor that stands out.

Sorry your little guy is going through this.

  • I would trust CHOA and wouldn't even know who else to consider. That said, there is nothing wrong with a second opinion.

This exactly. The CHOA group is amazing. I hope everything is ok but, if he does need the surgery he would be in wonderful hands.

  •    As the previous posters have mentioned- CHOA has excellent pediatric neurosurgeons (and you're going to be hardpressed to find actual pediatric neurosurgeons in too many places- Atlanta is actually very lucky in that regard).  The type of surgery you're talking about is actually a pretty simple procedure as far as surgery goes.   Personally, I would wait until the CT scan is done, and they explain everything.  If you have questions/concerns, ask the doctor.  After that, if you still don't feel completely comfortable, by all means get a second opinion (but at least you should have the scans and a baseline of information to compare against).

  • Thank you all for the advice and info. I was pretty sure CHOA was great. I'm very thankful that we live somewhere that has all these great resources. Thanks again!
