Either.

I didn't know it could be used for fabric softening.

I don't have stink issues, but thought it would be good to know some info in case I ever do.

I put it in the very first cold rinse, to help rinse out all the pee completely. I put about 1/4-1/2 cup and do it about every other time b/c I think it can wear down the elastic a bit.

I put at least 1/2 a cup in the pre-rinse of every load and then again in the fabric softener spot for my wash.

That's what works with our diapers, with our water and detergent though- I had to do a bit of trial and error

I use the downy ball and full to the small or medium line and just throw it in. I use it is every wash.
