Any BFers give formula at bedtime?

Has it helped LO sleep longer? When did you start it? How long does LO sleep?

I am considering trying this. L sleeps OK but is still up 2 or 3 times a night and the poor little guy has such a hard time staying awake to nurse a good feeding, so he doozes & wakes again an hour or so later sometimes. Even a diaper change doesn't always work to wake him enough.

I am just a bit nervous about trying it in case he ends  up with a tummy ache & we get less sleep! Opinions or experiences welcome!

Re: Any BFers give formula at bedtime?

  • When I'm at work (I work nights), DH will give DD a formula bottle just before bed (around 9-10pm) & she usually sleeps until 4am.

  • I saw your post on 3-6 but there were already a ton of replies.  I started giving my DD formula AND bfing at the night time feeding, last night and tonight.  I gave her 4 oz of formula and the rest BM.  Think she's doing well.  I fed her at 9:30 and shes still aleep at 10 til 1.  PM me tomorrow if you want to know the end results.  She's been up alot at night so I figured I could try something new.  Formula doesn't hurt your child all though some may act that way ;)
  • I am a pumper and for the past week we have been mixing BM with formula to wean my baby onto a sensitive formula just to see if it helps with her horrible gas issues, but I definitely find that she sleeps longer when she has formula mixed in with her bm before bed. We haven't done a full bottle of F yet, because I'm weaning slow to not upset her stomach, but I'm guessing we will see a bigger increase in sleep. I don't know if it makes a sleep difference for all babies, but it does so far for mine...
  • Have you considered giving a bottle of pumped breastmilk right before bedtime?  On the nights I've done that with my LO (and he gets a full 4-5 oz.) he sleeps like a champ (around 7 hours).  When I BF right before bed, he will wake up once for a feeding.  The more he eats, the longer he sleeps.  I considered doing the formula thing too, but this ended up working perfectly and it's still mama's milk!
