Babies: 0 - 3 Months

do you "sleep when baby sleeps?"

I swear, this was the most oft-repeated advice I received before H was born--and at the time I thought it made perfect sense. But now that he's here it almost never happens. For one, my LO is not a great napper unless I'm holding him (and me sleeping while I'm holding him makes me nervous, so I try not to do it). Also, when I do manage to get him to take a nap somewhere else--mostly in his bouncer--it is my ONE chance during the day to get things done. And I know everyone says to let the housework go--and I do for the most part until DH is home on the weekends--but realistically there are some things that just have to be done. Laundry, for instance.

So I'm just curious how many moms of newborns actually do get a chance to nap when LO naps. I guess I'm hoping I'm not the only one who doesn't. :)

Re: do you "sleep when baby sleeps?"

  • In the beginning I wanted to, but I found that made it more impossible to get awake and be there for him.  I would just get into a deep sleep and it was time to wake-up.  I found it much more rejuvenating to take a shower and get a nice meal to eat.

  • I did and still do. I can do things around the house at night after DD goes down for a bit but if she naps durning the day I'm going to nap as well.

  • thus far, no. I get a headache when I nap. Dishes arent going to do themselves
  • My DD still doesn't take great naps, 30 min tops and in the swing, I've given up on trying to sleep during the day when she does.  As soon as I fall asleep, she wakes up.  I go to sleep before she does in the evenings and let me dh take care of her or get someone during the day to help like my mom and sleep.
  • No, even if I tried when DS was little, I couldn't.  Sometimes I would just watch tv and be by myself for the hour and it was nice!

  • It's the biggest tease - sounds great, unless you have a 45 min napper or one that won't nap anywhere but on your lap (if at all).  I wish it were possible for us but sadly that day has not arrived.
  • No way, that's the only time when I can actually get stuff done.

  • MH keeps telling to do this, but then no work gets done around the house (laundry, dinner, etc). I sleep when he sleeps at night and usually take a quick nap with him during the day. My LO really likes to sleep in my arms, too and the best thing I've gotten is a Moby wrap. I can work and he can sleep.

  • I did the first few weeks when I had family here helping out, but not now.  My body has gotten used to less sleep so I'd rather get other things done or relax and watch my tv shows.
  • nope- it's my one chance to "do" stuff!
  • I take one nap a day with him. It's usually 2-3 hours long.
  • yes & no. i, like you, take the time to catch up on my housework. but, depending on what needs to be done sometimes i do nap during the day with LO & do housework when DH is home so he can tend to T

  • nope, there's no way I could fall asleep fast enough for it to matter ...
  • I take a nap once in the middle of the day when DD sleeps, I get about 2 hrs cause she is still sleeping so well.  As she gets older im not sure how her nap routine will go, but I am taking advantage of it for now.  The other times she naps I am doing laundry, cleaning, or just relaxing.
  • I did when I first had him.

I do now if he had a bad night, or if I'm just tired at the same time he's napping.

Most of the time I take one when DH gets home if I need to.

  • I did for the first 3 weeks or so, but I certainly don't any more. I work part time from home, so I have to take advantage of nap time now!

  • I took a lot of naps the first 2 weeks. Now I never nap.

  • Maybe once a day.  Usually his nap time is my time to eat, shower, do laundry, etc.

  • Not usually. I had to wash bottles, do laundry, shower, or eat. If DH was home to help I would take a nap during the afternoon while she was sleeping but otherwise, no.

  • I was just like you!  I think I took 2 naps the entire time I was with her before returning to work.  I would only do what absolutely had to be done-like laundry, dishes or cleaning the toilet (some things just can't be left for a man to do!).  My DH did everything else-he still cooks dinner to help out.
  • sometimes.  if i don't have much to get done or he kept me up a ton the night before i will.  but i also love sleeping w/ him on me or in bed with me so it's no big deal
  • Ha!!  I love that people tell you to do this, but it's totally unrealistic!!  I have twins and my babies rarely nap at the same time.

  • I try to do it at least during one of her daytime naps, but there are some days that doesnt happen.

  • We never did that. We liked to be up during the day, even though we were tired. And yes, you have to do things like eat and have clean clothes. It's not like people were beating down our door to do our laundry and make tp runs for us! These days if we have a bad night I'll catch a nap in the morning during DS's morning nap.

  • If I'm really tired I will. Usually I do other stuff like clean or read.
  • I used to nap with him on my chest. Now he's too big and not into it. Sometimes, like today, we will both nap together but I'll have to bf him to sleep.

  • When DS was that age, I tried as much as I could to sleep when he slept. Often, I would put him in the moby before he was sleeping. Once he was asleep, I would lay down and nap with him still wrapped on me in the moby.

Now that DS is a little older, I do whatever I can get done around the house during one of his morning naps and try to take one of the afternoon naps with him snuggling in bed with me.

I feel like DS is only going to be little for a small amount of time, and I want to savor as many snuggling moments as I can.

  • Nope, I'm playing with my two year old while she sleeps.  And on the rare day they nap together there's no shortage of ignored housework to catch up on.  Besides both my girls are/were catnappers when little, so if I'm lucky enough to have her asleep not on me I have just enough time to eat and do a little cleaning before she wakes back up.

  • I will often nap with him during his morning nap - usually 8-10 or so and we'll sleep in bed together. In the afternoons I'll lay with him on the couch but I usually watch TV, read or go online during that one.

I've also found that I resist taking naps when he does because by the time I fall asleep, he'll be waking up and then I'll feel even more groggy.

  • yeah not really...i do the same, wash the dishes, eat, fix her bottles etc
  • I didn't at first, but after 4 months of DD not sleeping well at night I kind of hit a wall and have since started napping with her. That  and along with the fact that she sleeps longer if we nap together.

  • I did, but only for the first two weeks.  Since then I've been using that time to eat, clean, put make up on, do my hair. Otherwise it won't get done.
  • I still do sometimes.  I am taking care of the 3 kids alone while my husband is in Iraq and it gets tiring to not have any break.  When the older 2 are at school I will often nap with the baby for her first nap, which is pretty much right after we drop them off.  She sleeps great at night but I do not.  My husband is online at night so many nights I am up late talking to him so I make up for it in the mornings if I am feeling super tired.  It is usually only once a week I nap or less.
  • While I was home, DD would wake up around 5 to eat, and then go down for another 1.5 hours or so.  I used to sleep then.  Any naps she took after that (which were maybe 20 min ones if I was lucky, an hour was a rareity), I showered, did housework, etc.).  I'm not great about taking naps or falling asleep so I knew I would be more productive doing other things.

  • My LO is like yours.  He is a terrible napper.  He will only sleep if I hold him.  It is hard to sleep holding him.  When he is asleep else where I need to do laundry or wash bottles.  Only if I am completely exhausted will I nap when he does and then I will typically just rest while I hold him.  You are not alone
  • I only "sleep when she sleeps" at night. I did fall asleep with her in the Moby the other afternoon sitting on the couch but I think it's because I felt so cozy and not nervous about dropping her. Then again, I also did laundry and vacuumed with her in there before falling asleep!
