Hi Ladies,
My husband had a semen analysis three months ago when going through tests with my obgyn. We were told that everything was within 'normal limits'. We had our first RE visit on Tuesday night and got some shocking news that my husband's morphology was a 0. I have no idea how my obgyn could consider this within normal limits. I am quite livid that I spend the last three months on clomid with her when there is a definate male factor. My dh repeted the analysis on Thursday. We should have the results back on Monday. At our RE visit, we were told if the results come back the same that IVF with ICSI is our best option. My question is has anyone had success stories with such low morphology? It just seems very confusing to me that anything would work if all sperm is abnormal. How could any sperm fertilize an egg if it is abnormal? His numbers were average, motility just shy of 50% so the morph. is the killer.
Any insight and advice is appreciate. Thank you.
Re: low morphology-success with ivf/icsi
I wish the search function worked around here - NEST GODS !!!!!!!!
There was a decent convo about this last week... I was able to find the link to it, so dig thru this and peek at the links I gave in it... basically even at 0% (as along as it's not ZERO sperm, and all the other numbers are kinda normal) he's still dealing with thousands of sperm that are normal. This thread will explain more.
Also, not sure if you know, but there's another infertility board here that has many women on it dealing with this, recently renamed "Infertility" and they might be able to offer more ideas too...
here's the link to our recent disussion...
basically.. .I say you're not doomed. Good luck !

You are not doomed at all.
We have SEVERE MFI -- they had DH give 2 samples on ER day because they couldn't find enough swimmers to fertilize my 16 eggs. He has low unders all around for sperm, really bad.
IVF with ISCI worked the first time for us!
I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.
And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!
You are not doomed. Our morph was low but not 0. I cant remember how low it was. I can tell you that all of DH's stats were bad and at the last SA before our ivf cycle his count was only 10,000. So they had to search for good sperm (of which there werent many) out of that small of a sample. DH was on clomid for a few months but we didnt do a SA after that to see how it improved things. You can definitley be successful!!!
You may want to ask your dr about the estrogen priming protocol. A few of us on here have done it. It is designed to help you get a higher # of good quality eggs. I am a firm believer that when there are severe MFI issues you need as many eggs as possible. Your fertilization rates may not be great (we fertilized 14 out of 28) so you need as many targets as possible, in my humble, non-dr opinion.
Wishing you the very best of luck. Feel free to ask me any questions anytime!
Ladies,
I wanted to thank you for you replies. They all have given me hope. My only question is it worth going through IVF with ICSI if all sperm could be abnormal? Do they need some normal sperm to perform this procedure? I just hate to spend all the time and money if the odds are against me. Thanks again!
We had low everything including 0% morph and I'm in due October after IVF w/ ICSI
Abnormally shaped sperm CAN fertilize eggs, even without ICSI
