3rd Trimester

3 hour glucose test, what would you do?

After I had failed the 1 hour test, I had to take the 3 hour test. I understood the reason and that it was somewhat normal to have to take the 3 hour test. So I took the 3 hour test, out of the four blood drawings I failed the 2 hour (I was 176, should be below 155) so they asked that I retake the test in a month. Fast forward a month later, this past Friday, I re-took the awful test. So today with the results I failed the 2 hour again at 158 (normal is below 155). Again, they ask in a month I re-take the test! After I got off the phone I realized in a month, this 3rd re-take is 3 weeks before my due date! What is the point? Anyone ever have this constantly repeated like me?

What would you do?

I have my next appointment Oct. 2nd so I plan to tell them I refuse it because my fasting is fine which was the only test done back in the day, I haven't gained a ton of weight (10.5 lbs by 33 weeks). What will determining the results at 37 weeks make a huge difference for the end of my pregnancy? There is also other tests they can do like they test for diabetics. I'm just not sure I understand what the difference will make at 37 weeks. Failing just 1 blood drawing does not warrant me to see a nutritionist, insurance and all.

  • Seems strange tome too.  I've not heard of anyone being asked to repeatedly retake the test.  I agree with you... what's the point at 37 weeks?  Of course, I'd talk to your OB about it... maybe there is a valid reason - but I agree, I don't know what difference it will make.

  • Umm, you need to be on the GD diet if you have failed twice. The fasting is not the only indication of GD. I have (and had) great fasting numbers, but failed the 3 hour. You need to DEMAND that they diagnose you now, because you could be seriously hurting your child.
  • Wow.  That's really annoying.  I can't believe they want you to take it for a third time!  I took it after failing the 1 hour (luckily I passed).  I would call your OBGYN and ask to speak to the doctor.  I would explain your concerns and just see what he/she has to say.  Seems funny they wouldn't change your diet and would just have you keep taking the test.  Sorry, that really sucks.

Seriously! It is considered failing the 3 hour if you fail 2 or more of the drawings. This is what my dr. told me and it's consistent with what I found online. Because I failed only 1 of the drawings it doesn't warrant being diagnosed with GD or to see a nutritionist. Since being told I had to retake the test this past 2nd time I've been following a low carb diet, luckily I have family that works in the food industry so I can gather knowledge from them in the meantime. I'm all set waiting my whole pregnancy to figure it out?! It's either diagnosis me or give me a valid reason why I need to continue to retake it, in my opinion.

I couldn't agree more. I'm sorry this has been so frustrating for you.

  • Cant you just follow the GD diet for a whopping 3 weeks?  That makes no sense - either they know or they dont by now!

  • I think since you failed 1/4 tests they want to keep checking you in case the disease manifests itself. GD can lead to high birth weight babies, jaundice babies, babies with breathing difficulties, and ones with low blood sugar at birth. If it were me, I would do the test again just to be on the safe side. GL :)
