Okay, WTF is this and WWYD about it?

Sorry so long.

I woke up on Saturday with this swollen, crescent-shaped area about 2 inches long right near my left eye. It looked like I got hit in the face with something, like it was a solid swollen patch, but upon closer inspection it was almost like a row of big bumps so close together that it looked solid.

I also noticed that my entire left nostril was covered with tiny bumps. Like so covered with them that it felt hard. It's also a bit numb.

The next day I discovered either bites or pimples in my left ear. Two of them. I might have gotten them at the same time that I got the others but just didn't notice them right away. I also have an itchy bump on the left side of my neck. The area near my eye is not itchy, nor is my nostril, but the bumps in my ear are a bit itchy.

I was puzzled and a bit concerned but figured the thing near my eye might be a spider bite (or several spider bites) or perhaps just a bunch of pimples. IDK what this thing on my nose is.

Sorry if TMI, but the other day the bumps near my eye started seeping. DH thinks perhaps they were spider bites and the poison was coming out? IDK. They're starting to heal now.

But last night my nostril started feeling like it was burning. Enough so that I thought I might have to take something like Tylenol or Ibuprofen to sleep. I put some Aquafor on it and that helped a bit (it felt like severely dry skin).

This morning the burning sensation woke me up, and when I looked in the mirror I saw that my entire nose is swollen. The pores on my nostril are also seeping now, too. At this point I'm a bit alarmed.

Should I go to the doctor? If so, how urgent do you think this is? I don't have a doctor here yet aside from an OB, so I guess I would have to go to urgent care. But I'm not sure if this warrants a doctor visit or not. I'm hoping this will clear up soon, but then I don't know about the swelling.

I apologize for the length of this, but I'm hoping someone might know what the eff this is.

  • Hey lady, the first thing I thought of was MRSA, but I'm FAR from an expert.

But, yes, get a primary asap and go today.

  • Where are you staying--do you have a house yet or are you in a hotel?  Does DH or DS have any of these spots?  I was thinking perhaps bedbugs...those are making a resurgence, especially in hotels...
  • I don't know what it is but sounds to me like you should get it checked out.   You moved to the Boston area, right?  Not sure where in the Boston area you ended up, but there is an urgent care center in Waltham.  It's run by Newton-Wellesley Hospital, but in Waltham and they are really good.

    Good luck.

  • i have no idea what it could be, but I would get to a doctor.  Sounds awful!  Feel better soon.
  • OMG, ew, I would totally go to the doctor.   If nothing else, maybe they can give you some super-strength cream or antibotic lotion so it doesn't get infected.  I hope it's nothing serious and that it heals quickly! Good luck.

DH has had MRSA several times and this doesn't sound like it.  MRSA usually looks like an "underground" pimple.  It's usually red, round and painful to the touch right from the start.

We're in a house. I certainly hope we don't have bedbugs! Yikes.

  • Sounds like it might be spider bites. Spiders bite in lines like that.

I would try some Benadryl to relieve the itching. And possibly find a doctor.

This is what I was thinking.  I would try the Benadryl first and if  you don't get any relief from that, go to a doctor.

It sounds awful though.  I hope it gets better quickly!

  • Definitely go to urgent care today.  It sounds like you have cellulitis (at least your nose).  Any swelling or outbreaks on the face should have attention fairly soon if it lasts more than a day or so.  Any chance you got near poison ivy, oak or sumac?  I would think those would be really itchy but possibly not.  The doctor can give you a steriod and some ointment to help.  No sense suffering.  BTW...doesn't sound like MRSA but it could certainly turn into it if is not taken care of.  Hope all is well soon.

The only reason I said this was because my cousin just had something like this and it turned out to be MRSA.  Like I said, though, I am FAR from an expert!

  • I would find a doctor today, but you may not have to go to urgent care. I still don't have a primary and have been in my house for 5 years. The one time I had to see one, I just called the clinic in the same group as my OB (so they have my records) and made an appointment with whomever was available.

  • My first guess would be cellulitis like the PP mentioned.

  • My 1st thought was MRSA too.  It is often confused as spider bites and if it is MRSA, yes, you need to be at the doctor's office.
